CSU Drops Contest to Division III Colorado College 12-7

Colorado Springs, Colo. (February 20, 2010) — The Rams struggled to keep up with Colorado College on the scoreboard Saturday. The Tigers took advantage of every possession, attacking fiercely and scoring often.

While the Tigers won on the scoreboard, the Rams played hard and lead the Tigers on face-offs and ground balls. “It’s definitely frustrating to look at the stat sheet and see that we basically won every category except for the most important one,” said Coach Alex Smith.

The first half ended with the Tigers in a 6-3 lead over the Rams, but entering into the next half the Rams put up a greater resistance giving the Tigers fewer opportunities for shots on goal. But while the Rams upped their game defensively, they still didn’t manage to take possession as often.

CSU won all but one face-off in the second half, but didn’t do much with the ball. “We didn’t do enough with those possessions. When you win 20 more face-offs than the other team, then you need to be able to translate that into more than just easy saves for their goalie or turnovers,” Coach Smith said.

Going into the final quarter of the game, it looked possible for the Rams to score five more points and tie the game, but CC didn’t get cocky and let up the pressure because of their lead. The Tigers secured their win with strong defensive plays and by scoring two more points in the final minutes of the game.

“I’d like to see our guys start to really take it personally as we head into this weekend,” Coach Smith said. “Lindenwood and Texas are both strong teams and they are important games. With all of the snow, practice won’t exactly be ideal, but we have to get better in order to challenge the top teams at our level.”
