Spring 2009 News After 14 Seasons, Colorado State Lacrosse Coach Flip Naumburg to Step Down - 7/8/09 Fort Collins, Colorado – After fourteen years on the job, Flip Naumburg will step down as head coach of Colorado State University men’s lacrosse this summer. Since 1996, Naumburg has patrolled the sidelines of the Green and Gold, leading his team to a record four Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national championships and six Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference titles. Following a tumultuous spring season in 2009, Naumburg says his decision was made “in the spirit of trying to do what is right for CSU lacrosse.” Read More Colorado State Knocked out in First Round of MCLA Championships - 5/12/09 Commerce City, Colorado- In one of the closest and most exciting games of the first round of the MCLA National Championships, #14 seed Colorado State Rams lost by one goal to # 3 seed Chapman Panthers, 8-9. They played a much better game than the first time around against the Panthers, but just couldn’t score in the final minutes to keep their championship hopes alive. With #2 seed Brigham Young playing #3 seed Colorado State at 4 p.m., and #1 seed Colorado hosting #4 seed Utah at 7 p.m. (according to the RMLC website), it should be anybody’s game. Both games will be played on Franklin Field, as well as the championship game the following day at 4 p.m. Read More Colorado State Scores 20 in Season Finale against Nebraska - 4/26/09 Fort Collins, Colorado- In their last game of the 2009 season, the 8th ranked Colorado State Rams (11-7, 2-2) put on one of their best shows as they defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-4, 3-1), 20-3. In addition to the offensive scoring spree, the Colorado State defense limited Nebraska to very few scoring opportunities. Read More #11 Colorado Upsets #8 Colorado State, 11-4 - 4/25/09 Boulder, Colorado- For the first time in quite awhile, the Colorado Buffaloes defeated the Colorado State Rams. It has been 10 years to be exact, with the Rams accumulating 15 wins against the Buffs in that time. Both teams had their backs up against the wall and needed to pull out the victory on Saturday to help out their cases for making the MCLA tournament. Colorado out-played Colorado State to earn the top seed in the RMLC tournament and put them in a better position to make a splash in the MCLA, while Colorado State falls to the third seed in the RMLC. Read More Colorado State Notches Tenth Victory of the Season against Wyoming - 4/22/09 Fort Collins, Colorado- The 8th ranked Colorado State Rams defeated the Wyoming Cowboys Wednesday evening by a score of 16-0. This score was almost to be expected considering the small size of Wyoming’s program. Read More Colorado State Loses Tight Battle to Sonoma State - 4/12/09 Fort Collins, Colorado- In a back and forth game, #10 Colorado State Rams were on the back end of #18 Sonoma State Seawolves as the game came to a close, losing 8-9 after a goal with 1:36 remaining by Jordan Ambler. The score did not exceed a two point differential the entire game, and while Colorado State appeared to control the stat sheet, Sonoma State controlled the scoreboard for much of the game. That was in large part due to excellent play by Sonoma State goalie Mike D’Angelo, who racked up 19 saves against the Rams. It was a great day for a game at a venue such as INVESCO Field at Mile High, and the crowd of 1,000+ was treated to a great show by both teams. In actuality, the Rams did win the first three quarters, but gave up the final four goals of the game to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to lose 9-8. Minnesota-Duluth scored 7 of the final 8 goals in the game, in fact. Read More #1 Michigan Wins in a Blowout Over #8 Colorado State - 4/4/09 Ann Arbor, MI- The University of Michigan Wolverines demonstrated why they are the first ranked team and defending champs as they defeated the Colorado State Rams by a final score of 16-3. The outcome of the game was a result of Michigan playing outstanding lacrosse and Colorado State not playing up to their potential. The Rams set the pace of the game by going on an impressive 4-0 run to put them in a lead from which they wouldn’t look back after goals from Cooper Kehoe (Stevenson HS; CA), Clayton Wilbanks (Heritage HS; CO) and two from Paul Larson (Columbine HS; CO). Kehoe ended up with two goals on the day while Larson had three. Both teams came out fired up and put on an exciting show for the crowd in one of the biggest games of the year for each team, if not the biggest, with Brigham Young coming out the victor, 9-6. After Florida beat up on the University of Colorado Buffalos the previous day 12-4, Colorado State knew they had to come ready to play if they were going to walk away with the victory. Read More Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse to play Lindenwood in Showdown at INVESCO - 3/10/09 Denver, Colorado- Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse will play Lindenwood, a fierce team out of Missouri, rather than the previously scheduled University of Colorado in their annual Showdown at INVESCO to be played on April 11th at 4 p.m. The game will be the second of a double header, with the University of Denver playing Notre Dame in the earlier game at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are now available through Ticketmaster for $15 a ticket, or $13 for a group rate, and all tickets sold will be good for both games. Tickets will also be sold two days on the Colorado State campus at a discounted rate of $10. A total of 15 different players for the Rams had at least one point on the day, led by sophomore attackman Paul Larson (Columbine HS; CO) with 5 goals. The first half was an intense battle for ground balls, while the second half was an offensive showcase for the Rams. This came as a shock to the Rams lacrosse team when they first heard the news as they gathered at the Edge indoor facility for a pivotal practice two days after their first loss of the season to Cal Poly. Read More Colorado State Takes Down UC-Santa Barbara in Season Opener - 2/21/09 Santa Maria, CA – In their first MCLA action of 2009, the #7 Colorado State Rams jumped out to an early lead over #9 UC-Santa Barbara and never trailed en route to a convincing 11-6 win in Santa Maria, CA at Righetti High School. The Rams got a huge effort from sophomore attackman Paul Larson (Columbine HS; CO), who scored 5 goals to lead CSU to victory. Sophomore goaltender Alex Jacques (Bainbridge Island HS; WA) was spectacular in the goal as well, recording 18 saves as the Rams reeled off 5 fourth quarter goals to pull away.
