#2 Colorado State Downs Missouri 14-5
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
March 20th, 2006

Lakewood, CO - After a snowstorm hit the Front Range over the weekend and rendered all fields snowbound, the #2 Colorado State Rams had to scramble to find a field location for their game against the visiting Missouri Tigers. Luckily for both teams, they were able to secure an indoor turf facility in west Denver at the last minute to keep the game as scheduled. Colorado State was able to fight off their Spring Break hangover and beat the Tigers 14-5 in their first on-field action since their 17-3 victory over Stanford last Tuesday.

While the Rams started a bit sluggishly, junior midfielder Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) was a sparkplug and came away with a season-high three goals and two assists. After Missouri's Chris Nagel tied the game at one with 6:31 left in the first period, the Rams rattled off ten goals in a row over the next 27 minutes of game time. Bird assisted the goals that pushed the lead to 3-1 as the Rams opened up a 5-1 lead after one quarter.

In addition to Bird's five points, the Rams got another solid contribution from junior attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY), who added two goals and one assist in what was actually his lowest scoring output of the season. Sophomore attackman Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH) made the most of his limited action by scoring two goals as well. He has scored a point in each of the last five games since earning a starting role on the CSU attack.

Colorado State led 8-1 at halftime and pushed their lead to 11-1 before Missouri was finally able to answer with two goals late in the third quarter. Only :25 after Missouri's third goal, the Rams got an answer from freshman midfielder Steven Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO) and then got the lead back to 10 on Bird's third goal of the day. Senior midfielder Tyler Bue (La Costa Canyon HS; Encinitas, CA) and sophomore John Tomlinson (Smokey Hill HS; Aurora, CO) each added one goal and one assist to a fairly balanced offensive output.

Missouri's sophomore goaltender Doug Mayer played extremely well for the Tigers, making 19 saves. Colorado State was able to get all four of their active goalies into the game after senior Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit; Overland Park, KS) made four saves in the first half. Chris Wolf paced the Tigers with two goals.

Missouri did win the fourth quarter of this game 2-1 as Colorado State began to have trouble clearing the ball and having good possessions as the game wore on and more players got playing time.

Colorado State (5-2) has still not played a true home game, but they will host two of them this weekend as Utah State and Arizona State come to town for games on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Game Notes:

- While the game was not played on CSU's campus, the team still got to wear their home white jersey/green helmet combination for the first time this season. They will take the field on their own campus on Friday night.
- This game marked the first in the series between the two teams.
- With his four saves in the first half, goaltender Pete Jokisch is now only two saves behind Alex Smith (2003) for the all-time save record at Colorado State. His current career total stands at 458.
- Danny Stevens has also moved into eighth all-time for scoring as his 42 points puts him 28 behind Tim Farquhar (2005) for seventh.
