Colorado State Defeats Simon Fraser 12-6 - 3/5/10

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo., (March 5, 2010)— Friday night provided the Rams lacrosse team with an exciting win against Simon Fraser. While the game wasn’t a huge upset, as the Rams were already ranked in the top ten, beating the Clansmen was a huge win that bodes well for the Rams future match ups against CU, Michigan and BYU.

“SFU is such a great offensive team, especially individually, and I couldn’t have been happier with the way we played one on one defense,” Head Coach Alex Smith said. Simon Fraser is known for a having a strong offense, but the Rams played a stronger defense, minimizing SFU’s shots on goal. “We won a lot of match-ups Friday and to be honest, that was something concerning us coming into the game,” Coach Smith said.

At the end of the first half, the score was close and the Rams were down. “The second quarter showed that we are still vulnerable in the clearing game a little bit. Against a team as dangerous as Simon Fraser, you can’t just give them the ball over and over because they will make you pay,” Coach Smith said. But the team amped up the game in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered points and securing the lead for the rest of the game.

This game was especially great for some of the freshmen, who played key roles in executing plays which led to the Rams success. One of those players was number nine, Austin Fisher. Fisher scored five goals and had one assist in the game. “Our defense was great and set up the offense with a lot of opportunities that we were able to capitalize on,” Fisher said.

The Rams will keep this game in mind when they begin their next out of state trip to Arizona during spring break. They will hopefully continue to make all the little connections that brought them to victory Friday to maintain their unblemished win record.
