Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Tonight is the banquet for Fall ball. We celebrate, and we take care of a bunch of "family business". The team elects captains and we all discuss "larger" issues together.
I want team input on some of the questions I am asking
I award game balls for every game that we win. This is a tradition for me. We (my old coach, Doc Stabler) did it when I was in college, "back in the day". I have done it at every
level that I have coached. It was a "no-braimer" from the start, because I only had to think back to how I felt when I got my first game ball awarded to me. It was like, "Who?
Me?" I treasured that orange ball from our 1974 overtime victory against D.U. In those days, overtime was two 4 minute periods, not "sudden victory". We smoked them in OT and
won 14-11, and it was the first time we (CC) had ever beaten them. My sad truth is that I no longer have this sacred "trophy", because in a moment of ball-less desperation somewhere
in the late 70s or early 80s it was put on "active duty", and, alas, disappeared. This is something that could never happen to Mike Napolilli, who, by the way, was just
signed by the Mammoth, Colorados new professional indoor team. I guess his signature on that contract signifies that we now have players in this program that go on to become pros after
they graduate. I am thrilled for him and thrilled for us. He knows how to value this stuff while it is happening, and always has. He will have a nice little trophy case at his house when he
is my age.
