#3 Brigham Young Spoils Hughes Stadium Debut, Hammer #2 Colorado State 17-10

#3 Brigham Young at #2 Colorado State
Saturday, March 23 2002
Fort Collins, CO
Hughes Stadium

After a chilly game in Boulder on Thursday, bright skies and beautiful
weather greeted the #3 Brigham Young Cougars to Fort Collins, CO to take on
the #2 Colorado State Rams at the university’s football facility, Hughes
Stadium. The Cougars came out firing, scoring ten goals in the first half
as they blew out their nemesis from the east by seven goals, the largest
margin of defeat at home since coach Flip Naumburg’s arrival. Colorado
State could not stop the explosive Cougar attack unit, who lit up the
scoreboard for 16 combined points.

Neither team had any trouble finding their rhythm offensively early as they
banged out 18 first half goals. Dave Rueckert (2 goals, 1 assist) fired a
shot high past junior netminder Alex Smith (16 saves, 17 goals against) to
start the scoring at 11:26. Senior attackman Mike Napolilli (1g, 3a)
answered back for the Rams just thirty seconds later and the assault on both
teams’ nets began. Doug Priebe’s (2g, 3a) man-up tally from Napolilli and
another drive by Rueckert left the score tied up at 2-2. Colorado State’s
Mike Hamm (1g) and Brigham Young’s Jordan Archibald (4g, 3a) scored to end
the first tied at three. A very vocal group of approximately 2400 fans were
on their feet as the quarter came to a close.

The second quarter treated the fans to even more potent offense as the
Cougars were led by their extremely dangerous attack unit of Archibald, Mike
Lee (4g, 2a), and Rex Hardy (3g) and the Rams countered with the speed game
of freshman Tim Farquhar (3g) and senior Ryan Davis (1g, 1a). Neither team
seemed to be having much success in six on six offense, but Brigham Young
was able to capitalize on many rebounds and other unsettled chances in the
period. Lee scored two goals ten seconds apart after finishing breaks for
the Cougars to push the lead to 6-4. With Colorado State starting face-off
middie Dave Clark on the bench with a knee injury, sophomore midfielder Phil
Eichhorn and sophomore defenseman Mark Plonkey took over the duties at the
center ‘x’ for the rest of the game. After Hardy scored an unassisted goal
with 7:50 left in the half, Colorado State and Brigham Young combined for
seven goals in the final five minutes, including four in the last minute.
The Cougars carried a 10-8 lead into halftime after the barrage. The ten
goals scored by the Cougars in the half were the second most that Colorado
State had given up in an entire game up to that point.

Doug Priebe scored his second and Farquhar finished his hat trick to knot
the score up at ten early in the third. But that would be the last goal the
Rams would muster on second half goalie Glenn Makechnie (13s, 2ga), who put
on a clinic for the rest of the game. Along with solid defenders Aaron
Quiggle, Jimmy Young, Jeff Jackson and Brian Kubesh in front of him,
Makechnie made several quality stops throughout the rest of the game to
quell any thoughts of a Ram comeback. On the other end of the field, Hardy,
Archibald and Lee simply wore down a defense that never looked comfortable
from start to finish. Brigham Young carried a 14-10 lead into the fourth
and then shut the Rams out for the rest of the game. By the time it was
over, Colorado State had not scored in 26 minutes.

Next up for the Rams (5-2 overall, 2-1 league) is a meeting with Coach Flip
Naumburg’s alma matter Colorado College (Division III) on March 31st with
Ann Arbor, MI and the Michigan Invitational looming just two weeks away.

Game Notes:

• The game marked the first ever non-football school sponsored event in stadium history.
• The home crowd was a record in attendance for the Colorado State lacrosse team.
• Freshman Dave Clark tore his ACL in the first quarter of the game. He will likely miss the rest of the season.
• Junior Alex Smith broke his hand in the game. He will be out anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
• Junior Joe Glischinski sprained his ankle and is questionable for the CC game on Saturday.
