Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal Monday, February 1, 2010 We had our lacrosse “Kickoff” dinner the other night at Coopersmith’s in downtown Fort Collins the other night. There were more than 100 people including parents, players, alumni, and other CSU ‘family’ dignitaries. I don’t want to name all the alums for fear that I will leave someone out, but they were a substantial group and that was great to see. It was a great venue with a buffet and lots of games to keep the younguns busy and having fun, and for people like Mark Moskovics (#35 LSM 2011) to show off his ping-pong prowess. A good time was had by all. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE We have gotten just a few practices under our belt, which is not bad since it is not yet even Ground Hog Day yet, but a little scary considering we have a scrimmage vs. Genesis men’s club team in less than two weeks. Plus, they already had a lacrosse game on ESPNU last night with a tape of the Team U.S.A. for the 2010 games playing Duke in a pretty lively exhibition from Orlando. I can’t decide if lacrosse starts earlier every year or if it just never stops. As a team we certainly have some work to do to get everything in a starting place before Feb. 13. There are so many parts to getting a team ready to play with your clears and your rides and your extra man plays. That’s not even to mention the basic offensive and defensive schemes and plans. The beauty of the game is that so much good progress can happen so quickly if everyone jumps on the same page. They got some good conditioning stuff done last week, and that is an obvious yet extremely important part of the process. Right now we are all over the practice map place wise and time wise as well. Tonight, for example, we are outside (Brrr) from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., while tomorrow we have the same late night time slot only it is indoors at the Edge Sports Center, which is in fact inside, a good thing, but isn’t much more than half of a field, a not-so-great thing. We are approaching these first couple of weeks as a training camp, though, so when indoors we are forced to break things down into smaller fundamentally focused parts and that is not altogether a bad thing or a practice with shortcomings. We have had some great sessions at the Edge over the years. THE FUTURE IS NOW With C.C. in less than three weeks and St. Louis in this, the shortest month of the year as well, we have to make sure that time doesn’t sneak up on us and that we do a good job of getting better (a lot better) every single day (or night). |
