Rams Run Over by Cougars 14-6 - 4/6/08 Fort Collins, CO – Josh Austin scored 6 goals for the visiting #6 Brigham Young Cougars as #4 Colorado State fell behind early and never got on track against their RMLC rivals on a pleasant Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins, CO. BYU led 8-1 at halftime and cruised to a 14-6 win over CSU in the most lopsided score in series history dating back to 2002. BYU dominated the possession time and executed well on both ends of the field to give the Rams their second consecutive loss in conference play and third straight loss to the Cougars in traditionally one of the best rivalries in the MCLA. BYU stormed out of the gates, scoring three goals in the first 8 minutes of the game. Attackman Justin Hier had all three of his goals as the Cougars eventually built a 6-0 lead through the first quarter and a half of play. Senior midfielder Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS; CO) finally got the Rams on the board with 5:08 to go in the half, but BYU promptly answered with two more goals to make the halftime score 8-1. Colorado State showed some life in the third period, scoring 5 goals, but BYU answered all but one of them within one minute to keep the game out of reach. Austin had all 4 BYU tallies in the period, most coming uncontested on the crease. The Cougars added two more in the final quarter to salt away the victory. Despite having 8 man-up opportunities, the Rams struggled to generate much offensive momentum outside of their third quarter outburst. CSU failed on all 8 man-up attempts. BYU outshot the Rams 43-27 and generally dominated all aspects of the scoresheet. Austin led all scorers with his 6 goals and BYU also got 5 points from Hier on 3 goals and 2 assists. MacDonald added 2 assists to his lone goal to lead the Rams, who also got 2 goals from sophomore attackman Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep; NJ). Colorado State (9-4 overall; 0-2 RMLC) must bounce back next week as the #1 Michigan Wolverines trip to Colorado for their first game in Fort Collins since 2003. The Rams defeated the Maize and Blue by 7 goals last season at a neutral site and Michigan will be keen on exacting revenge. The game is also the first annual Hall of Fame Game for the Rams as CSU inducts five players into their inaugural Hall of Fame Class. For Brigham Young (8-4 overall; 2-0 RMLC), an intriguing game against surprising Utah looms on April 17 in a game that will determine the #1 overall seed in the RMLC playoffs. Colorado State and Colorado will determine seeds 3 and 4 in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown on April 26 at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium. Game Stats:
