Colorado State Tops Boston College 9-7 - 2/29/08 Rosemont, MN – The #2 Colorado State Rams used a balanced scoring effort and stingy defense in the second half to defeat #12 Boston College 9-7 in the first game of the Chris Jenkins Memorial Tournament in Rosemount, MN. Seven different Rams scored goals and the Rams held BC scoreless for nearly 20:00 of game time in the second half for their first victory on the young 2008 season. Colorado State jumped ahead within the first two minutes of the game when Luke Miller (Regis Jesuit HS, CO) fed fellow sophomore Kevin Wolff (Don Bosco Prep, NJ) to open the scoring. The rest of the first quarter was nip and tuck as each team found the back of the net twice. BC scored with under a minute remaining on a coast to coast run by long pole Chris Ward to tie the game at 2-2. It looked like the Rams were going to open up a lead in the second quarter after stringing together three consecutive goals, but the BC man-up kept the Eagles in the game, scoring twice in the final minute to pull within one. While the settled defense played very well, CSU’s man-down allowed five goals for the second consecutive game. BC continued its man-up explosion in the second half, getting consecutive goals from Jeff Keady to take their first lead of the game, but CSU responded with two goals in the final five minutes to take a one goal lead going into the final frame. Freshman Cooper Kehoe (Robert Louis Stevenson HS, CA) bounced home a man-up goal and then senior Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS, CO) went low to low against BC’s T.R. Hoffman to give the Rams the lead. CSU outscored BC 2-1 in the final frame, holding the Eagles without a goal until there was 1:39 left on the clock to close out the win. Despite struggling on man-down, CSU did manage to kill most of a three-minute stick penalty by allowing only one goal and drawing a foul of their own in the third quarter. CSU’s man-up managed three goals in five chances as well. BC won 14 of 20 face-offs on the day, but CSU won every other statistical category including a decisive 14-3 edge in groundballs in the second half. Hoffman had 11 saves in the loss while Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit HS, CO) made 5 saves in the first half and Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS, CO) made 3 in the second to record the victory. Wolff led all scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists while Kehoe had 2 goals and 1 assist. Keady’s 3 points paced the Eagles. Next up for the Rams (1-1) is an evening tilt against the host team of the Chris Jenkins Memorial, the University of Minnesota. The Gophers are 4-0 already this year. BC takes on #3 Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the road-trip. Game Stats:
