Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

It was a very interesting practice today.  I decided or learned that what I really want to do over the next few and precious days are the types of drills where first we keep up a high level of intensity, but also ones with a high degree of success built in. In other words I plan to do the drills we do best and leave the other ones in the 2008 dust.   I want to work on the things we do well more than I think I might want to reinvent our approach to anything at this point in time.

Sure I would like us to evolve to the point of being in a magically new, higher team place, but then I'm not going to go with trying to put in too much new stuff.  We have enough tools in our belt. I don’t want to force things too much either.  We haven’t practiced EMO (extra man offense) either of the last two days, for example and as much as I would like to have (we are down to 17% success and we need to work on that a lot), largely because we haven’t had everyone there.  I am in a not-to-worry place with all that, though.  I will do it, whatever it is, when the time is right.

Today worked.  Yesterday’s scrimmage was excellent (for me and my purposes), but today had its upside, and we had the trainer session to boot.

WHY I OUGHTA

One of our players has gone with the Larry (Three Stooges) look.  I admit that this is the first tribute to the Three Stooge’s ‘middle man’ that I have ever seen.  I’ve seen the Moe Mullet, and I’ve definitely seen a few ‘curly cuts’ (bald) as well.  I can hardly look at the kid and not crack up.  Thank God he wears a helmet most of the time.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND?

I made hotel reservations for Dallas months ago, even though I was not sure if we were going to go.  I just today figured out that this hotel, the one we have stayed at the last two stops in Dallas has become much farther away from our new playing venue, so instead of being next door like all the other teams will be, we would now have to hike it 30-40 minutes to get from hotel to field place.  I am wrestling with that.  The team doesn’t seem to mind being that far from the madding crowd, so maybe I shouldn’t care either.  We liked being able to stretch out in those large suites, and ultimately we don’t like to be near other teams anyway.  Besides we can do our morning stretches across the street from the hotel and that is worth something too.
