#2 CSU Breezes Into National Semis with 14-0 Blanking of #11 Arizona State - 5/16/07

Frisco, TX - After dispatching #15 Florida in the MCLA tournament's first round Tuesday night, the #2 Colorado State Rams marched into the semifinals with a commanding 14-0 shutout win over the #11 Arizona State Sundevils on Wednesday. The Rams controlled the pace of the game all over the field on a pleasant evening at Pizza Hut Park, using patient offensive possessions and stifling defense in the victory. Junior midfielder/attackman John Tomlinson (Smoky Hill HS; Aurora, CO) was absolutely stellar, scoring three goals and six assists. CSU's win was the first ever winner's bracket shutout performance in tournament history.

The Rams got offense going early, hitting a pipe on their first possession before Tomlinson scored his first of the game with 11:21 remaining in the first quarter. Colorado State managed to put home two more in the first frame to carry a 3-0 lead into the break. The second period saw more of the same as the Rams methodically broke down ASU's defense and got good looks at Sun Devil goalie Clay Tourault. Tourault had a good game in the losing effort, posting 16 saves, but CSU's offense was just too much.

Seniors Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) and Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) each had four points for CSU. Senior midfielder Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) pitched in with two goals also as seven different players made the scoresheet in the victory. Junior goaltender Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) made four saves in just over three quarters worth of work.

Outside of Tomlinson's barrage, which included a behind the back laser in the third quarter, the story of the day was CSU's close defensive unit. Freshman Andrew Stein (Columbine HS; Littleton, CO) teamed up with seniors Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) and Ian Wilson (Arapahoe HS; Littleton, CO) to make life difficult on Arizona State's dangerous attack unit. Using a patient, non-sliding defense, the Rams were able to simply force ASU into mistakes before getting into any real offensive groove. The Devils finished with only 20 total shots, 5 of which were on cage.

Colorado State (15-3) moves on to the semifinals where they will square off with the #3 Oregon Ducks. In their first game of the season, the Rams were blown out by Oregon 19-6 in Eugene and will be looking to show better this time around. Oregon defeated Minnesota-Duluth by a score of 10-8 in the other quarterfinal. On the other side of the bracket, #1 Brigham Young will take on #5 UC-Santa Barbara for a place in the MCLA national championship game.
