#4 CSU Freezes Out UC-San Diego 17-4 for Fourth Straight Win - 3/29/07 Fort Collins, CO Despite snow-covered fields early in the day, the #4 Colorado State Rams were able to host the UC-San Diego Tritons on the campus of Colorado State University Thursday afternoon. While the fields warmed up enough to melt the snow, the conditions were cold and blustery and CSU dominated the warm-weather Tritons from start to finish in a 17-4 romp that saw 13 different players score points. All active field players got game action in the contest as the Rams moved to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 on their three-game home stand.
Intermittent snow fell throughout the game on a frigid afternoon as the Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead through one quarter of play. The Tritons started the game in a zone defense, but the CSU offense was able to pick it apart for six early goals. Junior midfielder Ryan MacDonald (Smoky Hill HS; Aurora, CO) continued his scoring spree, tallying the first two goals of the game. MacDonald would score again in the second quarter, giving him three goals for the second game in a row.
CSU continued the offensive onslaught in the second quarter, adding two more goals before UCSD could stop the bleeding at 8-1 with 5:15 remaining in the half. CSU answered right back to take a commanding 9-1 lead into the halftime break and the Rams kept the pedal down in the second, outscoring the Tritons 8-2 over the final 30 minutes of play.
Junior attackman Ben Wallace (Thomas Jefferson HS; Denver, CO) played very well in extended minutes, recording two assists to go with his two first quarter goals. Wallaces four points tied him for the game-high with senior midfielder Pat Bird (Bishop ODowd HS; Oakland, CA), who pitched in with one goal and a season-high three assists. Senior attackman Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) also netted three goals on the afternoon.
Two CSU longpoles got in on the scoring action as senior Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) buried two shots past Triton goalie Daniel Pomerantz and junior Tom Fender (Thunder Ridge HS; Highlands Ranch, CO) notched his first of the season as well. Fender had another nice game, scooping up a game-high seven groundballs. Schnirel and the rest of the CSU longpoles put pressure on the UCSD attack all afternoon long, rarely giving the Tritons a chance to set up in the offensive zone. When called upon, junior goaltender Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit; Denver, CO) was solid, making six saves in his first start of the year. Fitzgerald played three quarters before giving way to sophomore Alex Jacques (Bainbridge Island HS; Bainbridge, WA), who made three saves and allowed one goal in the final quarter.
CSU enjoyed some welcome success in the face-off department, winning 17 of 24 draws on the day. Juniors Lee Cates (Rangeview HS; Aurora, CO) and Joel Tromburg (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) won a combined 10 of 13 and sophomore Pat Miller (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO) pitched in with three wins in three tries to bolster the possession game.
The Rams dominated every other statistical category as well, outshooting UCSD 57-17 and picking up 58 groundballs to the Tritons 35. CSUs clearing game was a perfect 17 for 17. Pomerantz was excellent at times for the visiting team, making 21 saves over the game. Midfielder Tim Carter led the Tritons with two points on one goal and one assist.
Colorado State (8-2 overall; 2-1 RMLC) has Friday off before completing their home schedule on
Saturday against Chapman, another team from the challenging WCLL. UCSD falls to 2-8 and will make
the trip to Boulder to take on #5 Colorado later in the week.
