Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal Tuesday, July 24, 2007 DOO DAH We just finished the CSU Ram Camp for 2007. The weather was good, not too hot, and with only one single lightning glitch and that really cost us no time at all. We had a nice combination of everything, including 'counselors' from the outside. We had some sessions with Outlaw (Pro) players and that always gets the kids excited. We had only one serious injury, an ACL tear, but by the fourth day there were many warriors on the sidelines with sprained ankles and the like, proving once again that playing four days in a row is a most difficult challenge at best, and an absolute task at times. DON'T YOU KNOW WE DANCED WE DANCED TIL A QUARTER TO THREE Overall, and after the first day the energy was great. I think they were all up until like 3:00 a.m. the first night, like some giant slumber party I suppose. I wouldn't know because I am snoring away, and I do mean far away in my own bed, the care of the little loves entrusted to our 'incredible' staff from lockdown at 10:00 until drag-em-out in the morning. I know that first morning it was like coaching a bunch of zombies when we started, as if lacrosse was the afterthought of it all after all. FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES Of course the younger ones always have the most enthusiasm and that works well because one of our main camp philosophies is that it be fun for one and fun for all. It shouldn't just be more rewarding for the more talented, older, or farther advanced player. Rather it's about building a team concept by erecting family values quickly. The younger ones always want to answer my lax questions with hands held high, waiting to be called upon. I like that. It makes me feel like I'm a real teacher there for a minute. Why can't we get up to 150 campers? We had about 125, but we just can't seem to get over the hump and on to 150. I think it would make all the difference because we were hurting on depth a little at times, and the extra 25 could have been huge to round out all three groups. Even so we had some great scrimmages that were extremely competitive. THE ROAD MOST TRAVELED I have done more 'recruiting this past spring and summer than ever before. We shall see if I can get a dividend or two for the time. I certainly recognize that I'm not the best at it (sweet talking boys and fathers at the same time). I have the foot-in-mouth thing going. I might as well have Turret's for God sakes. Sometimes I wonder why they come to me, but later I realize that most of them just end up here, and thoughts that they come 'to play for me' are delusional for the most part anyway. COMIN' DOWN THE TRACKS 2008 is coming and I don't have much planned for it in terms of CSU lacrosse. One might say that I need to get on the stick pretty quick. It does look like Minnesota in Febtuary for a couple of games. What, excuse me? Oh, indoors at UM's indoor facility. Still, flying to Minnesota in the winter would seem to right away to not make sense. Spring break looks like San Diego for UCSD and a couiple other neutral site encounters. For now that is all. |
