#2 Colorado State Scores Seven in Fourth to Defeat #12 Utah in RMLC Semis
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse
By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
April 9th, 2006
Logan, UT - The #2 Colorado State Rams needed seven fourth period goals to put away the #12
Utah Utes in a Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference semifinal game on Friday evening. The Utes
scored the first three goals of the game and played their best game against the Rams since
a 5-4 upset over CSU in 2003. Utah led 8-7 at one point in the fourth quarter before the Rams
scored seven of the next eight goals to put the game away and win 14-10.
Utah jumped out to an early advantage thanks to Jason Johnson and Walker Hewlett. Johnson
sandwiched tallies around Hewlett's goal only 4:24 into the game to give the Utes a 3-0 lead.
CSU struggled to get much going in the first part of the quarter, but were able to answer
with their own three goal run over the next five minutes. The teams traded goals to end the
first period tied at four.
In his first major starting role of the season, sophomore attackman Dylan Bowman (Fairfield
HS; Boulder, CO) exploded for five points on one goal and four assists. Bowman had his hand
in two goals in the first half as the Rams inched their way to a 6-4 halftime advantage.
Hewlett continued his strong play, scoring the tying goal late in the third period and
then getting the go-ahead goal for the Utes less than a minute into the fourth.
But CSU's big guns were about to wake up and put this pesky Utah team on the mat for good.
Freshman midfielder Stephen Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO) and junior attackman
Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) assisted on one another's goals and Bowman gathered
three of his assists in the final frame as the Rams got things turned around. After scoring
only one goal in the first three quarters, attackman Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus,
OH) exploded for three goals in the fourth quarter as well.
Utah's success was due to their dominance at the face off 'x' and on groundballs. Rich
Levi won 15 of 19 draws and the Utes outgroundballed the Rams 48-40 on the day. Levi had
15 grounders in a huge effort. CSU was led by Stevens and Bowman, each with five points.
Utah goaltender Jeremy Johnson made 14 saves on the day while CSU netminder Pete Jokisch
(Rockhurst Jesuit; Overland Park, KS) made 10.
Colorado State will now play Colorado in a rematch of last weekend's 9-6 CSU victory at
INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium. Colorado defeated Brigham Young 10-3 in the other RMLC
semifinal earlier in the day.
Game Notes:
- This game marks the fourth straight year the Rams have defeated the Utes in the RMLC
semifinals. Tomorrow's game against the Buffaloes will be the second time the two rival
schools from northern Colorado have met in the RMLC finals, but the first since 2000.
- Utah had great success on the man-up, going 3 of 8 on the afternoon.
- Colorado State had 8 penalties on the day while Utah was flagged for four.
- Sophomore attackman Campbell Diebolt and sophomore midfielder Ryan MacDonald both missed
this game due to injury. Both are doubtful for tomorrow's championship game.
- Utah's 10 goals are tied for the second most allowed by CSU by an MDIA team this year.
BYU scored 11 two weeks ago while Sonoma State scored 10 in March.
