#6 Brigham Young Upsets #1 Colorado State 11-8
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
April 14th, 2006

Denver, CO - Playing in the University of Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, the #1 Colorado State Rams and the #6 Brigham Young University Cougars renewed one of the best rivalries in the MDIA on a hot Friday afternoon. CSU was not able to hold onto an 8-5 lead after three quarters and BYU scored six in a row to take home an important 11-8 upset victory.

BYU led 5-4 at the halftime break in front of a good sized crowd of nearly 500 fans. CSU struck early at the start of the third quarter to tie the game on a man-up goal from Brian Stone (Air Academy HS; Colorado Springs, CO). From there, CSU's attack unit combined on the game's next three goals to jump out to either team's biggest lead at 8-5. But Brigham Young scored only :10 into the fourth quarter and the Cougars went on a huge six-goal run to close out the game and put their rivals from Fort Collins down for the count.

BYU scored four goals in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to regain the lead. The Cougars were getting good looks on unsettled situations and burying their opportunities. CSU was unable to keep the BYU midfield out of the middle of the field and the Cougars found themselves on the doorstep for a lot of chances.

The Cougars midfield was explosive as Dan Cole and Tyler Monteath kept the Rams on their heels by scoring two goals a piece. Marshall Kay and Josh Austin each scored two goals for BYU as well. Cougar goaltender Glenn Makechnie made 15 saves in the victory.

The first half of the game was nip and tuck as neither team were able to open up a lead of more than one goal. CSU struck first on an early strike from Campbell Diebolt (Central Bucks East; Doylestown, PA), but BYU answered quickly on a midfield dodge from Cole.

Colorado State's momentum in the third quarter was due greatly to the success of sophomore Joel Tromburg (Heritage HS; Littleton, CO) at the face-off 'x.' Tromburg had a great day winning draws, but BYU was very good at double-teaming him after he got the ball in his stick.

CSU was led once again by sophomore attackman Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH) and junior attackman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY). Treece finished the day with two goals and two assists while Stevens got his three points on one goal and two assists. Diebolt also pitched in with two goals.

Colorado State (11-3 overall; 2-1 RMLC) will close out the regular season against Colorado at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium. BYU has Colorado in another key RMLC contest on Saturday. With BYU playing Utah next weekend as well, the RMLC will stay wide open until the last day of the season.

Game Notes:

- This is BYU's second straight win over CSU. The Cougars defeated CSU 8-7 in last year's RMLC championship game. The last time BYU beat CSU in the regular season was a 17-10 decision at CSU's Hughes Stadium.
- CSU had not lost a regular season game to MDIA opponents going all the way back to a 10-8 loss to UC-Santa Barbara on April 4th of 2004. In the meantime, they won 26 straight regular season games against MDIA teams.
- Colorado State's last game of the season against Colorado carries extra significance following BYU's loss to the Buffaloes on Saturday. All three teams stand at 2-1 in conference play.
