#1 Colorado State Crushes #13 Utah 13-3
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
April 9th, 2006

Fort Collins, CO - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon on the campus of Colorado State University, the #1 Colorado State Rams scored four first quarter goals and got points from ten different players to put away the visiting #13 Utah Utes. CSU's attack unit combined for fourteen points as the Rams never trailed en route to their second RMLC victory of the season.

After starting slowly the day before against Oakland, Colorado State did not waste any time in putting their mark on the game against Utah. The CSU attack was responsible for the first two goals within the game's two and a half minutes. Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) assisted both Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH) and Campbell Diebolt (Central Bucks East HS; Doylestown, PA) in the opening moments of the game as Colorado State was getting good looks at the goal early on. Stevens had a game-high six points on one goal and five assists while Treece and Diebolt added three goals and one assist apiece.

With Colorado State in the lead 4-0 after one quarter, Utah scored two quick goals at the start of the second from Jason Johnson and Walker Hewlett. Utah played their best quarter of the game in the second, but Colorado State scored the next four goals to essentially put it away. CSU's attack continued their dominance in the second, having a hand in each of the team's four tallies.

Utah goaltender Jeremy Johnson began to play well after the initial surge by CSU. Johnson made 17 saves through about three and a half quarters of play as Colorado State outshot the Utes 50-28. The Utes were paced by Tom Fernandez, whose two assists early in the second quarter gave him the team lead in points.

CSU led 8-2 at halftime, but their offense hit the doldrums in the third quarter. While a lot of that had to do with Johnson's five third quarter saves, CSU simply could not gain any meaningful possessions and threw the ball away numerous times. However, the Rams were able to wear down Utah on the ride and the Utes couldn't close the gap. CSU defensemen Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS; Fort Collins, CO) and Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) were stellar against Utah's best two attackmen. Bershinsky and Schnirel held Parker Ellison to just one shot and Fernandez had only the two assists on the day. Senior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit; Overland Park, KS) helped shut down any chances that the Utes were able to muster with 11 saves.

Colorado State (11-2 overall; 2-0 RMLC) has only two games remaining in their regular season. The Rams will take on Brigham Young next Friday as part of a doubleheader at the University of Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. DU will take on GWLL foe Notre Dame in the nightcap after the CSU/BYU game at 3:30. Utah is now 1-2 in the RMLC and will need to beat BYU to avoid being the fourth seed for the RMLC tournament. Colorado State, Brigham Young, Colorado and Utah have all clenched spots in the RMLC playoffs at the end of April.

Game Notes:

- Colorado State has now won six in a row against the Utes going back to 2003. Utah was the only MDIA team to beat the Rams during that season, but CSU has gotten back on track against the Utes since then.
- Danny Stevens continues to lead the RMLC in points with 63. The junior attackman is now only seven points behind seventh place on the CSU all-time list. He is on pace to break into the top 5 by the end of the season.
- This weekend marked the only two games of the year for CSU on their "true" game field. They were moved to a practice field for games against Arizona State and Northern Colorado.
