Bird and Treece Score Three Each to Propel #2 Colorado State Over Div. III Colorado College 9-3
Colorado State University Men’s Lacrosse

By Alex Smith (970-377-1390)
March 4th, 2006

Colorado Springs, CO - On a warm day at Colorado College's Washburn Field, the #2 Colorado State Rams outscored the Colorado College Tigers 5-1 in the second half en route to their third consecutive victory over CSU head coach Flip Naumburg's Alma Matter. The Rams got three goals apiece from sophomore attackman Tyler Treece (Upper Arlington HS; Columbus, OH) and junior midfielder Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS; Oakland, CA) as they slowly distanced themselves from a young and rebuilding Tiger team.

Colorado College held a 2-1 lead after a sloppy first quarter that saw the Rams throw the ball away numerous times and struggle to maintain possession. Senior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit; Overland Park, KS) made three of his 11 saves in the first quarter as he kept the Tigers from opening up a more sizable lead. CSU tied the game early in the second quarter on a goal from freshman midfielder Steven Lundberg (Cherry Creek HS; Englewood, CO) and never looked back, scoring seven of the final eight goals of the game.

Tyler Treece, making his first start of the year at attack, found himself open on the crease for a multitude of opportunities throughout the game. Each of his three goals were assisted and basically uncontested as he scored his first points with the Rams after transferring from Ohio Wesleyan. His goal with 10:15 remaining in the second quarter gave the Rams a lead they would never relinquish. Another bright spot for Colorado State was the play of midfielder Pat Bird, who finally broke out with his first three goals of the season. Senior midfielder Tyler Bue (La Costa Canyon HS; Encinitas, CA) also chipped in with one goal and one assist.

Colorado State's defense was solid after a slow start. Senior Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS; Fort Collins, CO) spearheaded a unit that kept the pressure off Jokisch for much of the game. With Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon HS; Pittsburgh, PA) and Ian Wilson (Arapahoe HS; Littleton, CO) playing well also, the Tigers were unable to get much offensive production, even when they possessed the ball for extended periods. Jokisch was good when he had to be, but had a relatively easy day thanks to the play of his defense.

Colorado College held a glaring advantage in face-offs, winning 11/16 draws. Tim Barker won 10/13 on his own and the extra possessions likely kept this game from getting out of hand. Colorado State also helped keep the game close by making a host of mental mistakes.

Both teams committed their share of penalties, as CC was flagged for ten fouls and CSU seven. The CSU man-up converted on back-to-back opportunities at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Colorado State (2-1) will prepare for their second trip to the west coast this season to take on the #1 Sonoma State Seawolves. The Rams will also play Notre Dame de Namur (Division II) and Stanford on their trip to the northern part of California.

Game Notes:

- The win marks the third consecutive win for the Rams over the Division III Tigers. CSU got their first win in over ten years in 2004 when they beat CC 11-6 and then bested the Tigers again in 2005 by a score of 14-11. Naumburg had never beaten his Alma Matter to that point.
- This six-goal win was the largest margin of victory for either team in the last eight years.
- Senior Danny Stevens (Suffern HS; Suffern, NY) scored four points for the third consecutive game. He had four assists to move his team-high point total to 13.
- Freshman Steven Lundberg has now scored at least one goal in each of the team's three games.
- The man-down unit continued to be flawless, shutting out the Tigers in seven man-up chances. Though it should be noted that one of the Tigers' goals was scored just as a penalty was releasing and the Rams were not yet at full strength.
- With five groundballs today, sophomore midfielder Lee Cates (Rangeview HS; Aurora, CO) now leads the team with ten on the season.
