Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal
Wednesday, November 30, 2005
We had over 35 at the Edge last night. It was great energy and they didnt even totally
suck! I had high expectations for last night and I say happily that I was rewarded with
some pretty good stuff.
BARE TREES
The leaves are definitely gone now. It got cold this week.
Just one year ago the fall lacrosse season was much more comprehensive and concentrated.
It was resplendent with 11 or 12 games and also that many game balls to hand out. This fall
recently completed didn't amount to much on paper, but hopefully we got some lasting work
done, and that all is well that ends well. We have paid our debt to society, and I think
we are no longer under any travel restrictions. I look forward to Las Vegas next October.
This fall ball season did have some moments in spite of it all.
The time period in between the end of fall practices and the first ones of spring was pretty
much close to 3 months back in the day. Having the Edge these last two years has allowed
us to close that gap. I just point it out. Slow starting has not been a problem in recent
years, but I still much prefer it now when we will only be apart and without team practicimg
for a month or so.
WHERE AM I?
Every year I have written "report cards" on everyone on the team, and then I post
them all for all to see. I think this time of year has traditionally been when I have done
it, and it is theoretically a good time to do this because with any luck I can leave them
with something to either work on or think about over the Christmas/winter break. The nice
thing about having practice two nights a week right up until December 15 as we are now is
that the break hopefully isn't long enough to force us to basically start over from scratch
in January. I try to cling to an ongoing concept. Everything is ongoing as much as it can
possibly be, at least that is my ongoing quest.
FAMILY GUY
Since we try to function as a family there are no secrets, and I think they all really like
the fact that whatever I have written in the report cards is also posted for all to see.
I remain a know-the-truth-and-the-truth-shall-set-you-free, family style kind of coach
PLEASE PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR
.
On the one hand they (players) enjoy and look forward to these evaluations. On the other
I guess I am always looking for ways to evolve it, improve it, and maybe even have more
fun with it, although, I admit that I like doing the basic reports and think they are an
invaluable coaching tool. Having said that, the responses by the players to my sometimes
brutal honesty are neither identical nor predictable.
ONCE UPON A TIME or GONE WITH THE WIND
I had the idea that maybe I could do it (report cards) a little differently this time. Maybe
I would introduce and develop the players as part of an ongoing plot or soap opera in here
(journal/blogalong). The players would sort of be like characters in our little 2006 CSU
lacrosse production of HRT II. It seems like quite the daunting writing project, however,
as in too big for me to handle. So at this point Im not sure what I will do and I
actually already have no idea what I am doing, so I got that going for me.
I do know that I have already and recently written semi-extensively in here about three
of our Captain characters, and there are indeed 4 of those meshketeers. I look forward to
the one more, so who knows after that.
One way or another it will be my intent to get each player on our team some useful WRITTEN
information sometime soon (05) about how they can help team more as individual in
2006. I want them to know what they can do on their own between now and 82 days hence that
can help us in coming together when we play Santa Barbara that night in February.
