#1 Colorado State Suffers 8-7 Loss to #3 Brigham Young in RMLC Final
Greeley, CO

By Alex Smith
April 30, 2005

The Colorado State University lacrosse team had its three-year run as conference champions ended by Brigham Young University in Greeley, CO Saturday afternoon. BYU did not trail for the final 39:00 of the game and held off CSU's fourth quarter comeback attempt to win their first RMLC title since 2001. BYU's 8-7 victory over the Rams is their first since 2002 and was the first loss by the Rams to someone other than UC-Santa Barbara since the 2003 season.

BYU held a 7-4 lead at one point in the fourth quarter before seniors Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) and Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) pulled the Rams within one with 3:34 remaining. But BYU's impressive freshman midfielder Dan Cole was able to answer back on a spinning left handed shot to the far lower corner with 3:00 left to give the Cougars enough cushion to take home the victory. Colorado State had a chance in the final minute to tie but was unable to get one home and watched BYU take the field in celebration of an RMLC championship.

BYU's Cole started the scoring just :30 into the contest, but goals would not be so easy for either team as the game progressed. A late season cold front blasted the Front Range and light rain and snow fell intermittently throughout the contest. Both defenses and goaltenders were aided by wet field conditions and cold weather as players lost their footing on numerous occasions. Colorado State took the lead as the first quarter was winding down thanks to goals from sophomore midfielder Ryan Trude (Mt. Lebanon HS, PA) and freshman attackman Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) to make it 2-1 after one.

BYU goalie Chris Powers had a sensational first quarter, turning away six CSU shots and keeping his team in the game while the Rams unleashed 13 shots at the freshman goalie. Junior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit HS, MO) had another very good game for the Rams as well, making several point blank stops to bail out his team. Both goalies certainly had their moments in this game. Powers turned away 16 shots in the win while Jokisch recorded 13 saves of his own.

With the game tied 3-3 at the half, BYU's Jordan Theurer and Kellen Gunderson scored two late third quarter goals just over a minute apart to push the Cougar lead to 5-3. But CSU junior midfielder Michael Murphy cut through the middle of the BYU defense and put one away with :24 seconds remaining to set up the exciting final quarter.

Face-offs were certainly the story of the day. BYU owned the 'x' by winning an astounding 14 of 17 draws. Phil McClure and Walker Bateman handled just about everything the Rams threw at them to give the Cougars valuable possessions. The rest of the stats were relatively even with BYU winning groundballs 43-36 and CSU out shooting BYU 34-31.

After BYU got a goal to get the lead back up to two in the fourth, an ill-advised CSU shot led to a BYU fast break goal by Josh Austin to make it a 7-4 game with only 8:35 remaining. But the Rams weren't done yet. Farquhar ripped one home from the left side of the cage and Stanitz-Harper muscled his way to the net to pull CSU within one before Cole answered for BYU. Stanitz-Harper got his second goal of the game off a looping feed from Cunningham with 1:18 remaining, but CSU could not muster the tying goal as time ran out.

Stanitz-Harper led all scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists. Cunningham (1g, 1a) was the only other multi-point contributor for the Rams on the afternoon. BYU got two points apiece from Cole, Mark Tschaggeny, Walker Bateman, Jordan Theurer and Pete Stevenson.

The loss moves the Rams to 15-1 and they will have to wait to find the seeds for the MDIA tournament on Monday. BYU goes to 14-3. Both teams are likely locks for a top 4 seed but could fall anywhere from 1-4 depending on voting. The MDIA playoffs start on May 10, 2005 in Blaine, MN.

Game Notes:
- The RMLC Championship Tournament was a classy event on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado. Despite the bad weather, all games were played and the fields were in relatively good shape throughout the weekend.
- Goaltender Pete Jokisch was called for a trip midway through the second quarter. Freshman Adam Taylor stepped into net for the 6 on 4 opportunity, which BYU was able to capitalize on.
- CSU's man-up was unsuccessful in three attempts while BYU went 1/5.
- BYU's RMLC Championship was had thanks to two one-goal victories as they beat Colorado 9-8 in the semifinals.
- Several CSU players were honored with All-League selections after the game, including first-team attackmen Nick Stanitz-Harper and Shay Cunningham, first-team midfielders Tim Farquhar and Pat Bird, first-team defenseman Kellen Bershinsky and first-team goaltender Pete Jokisch. Flip Naumburg was also named RMLC Coach of the Year.
- Cunningham and Stanitz-Harper finished the year with 58 and 56 points respectively. Farquhar was next on the list with 47 points while sophomore attackman Danny Stevens notched 44.
- The last time CSU lost was by this same score to UCSB in the 2004 national championship game.

CSU vs CU
On Saturday, April 16, at 7:00 pm the big game will be played at the neutral site of Shea Stadium, on the south side of Denver, in Highlands Ranch. Last year the game, which is and was coordinated and promoted by the CSU Ram Lacrosse Alumni Association, drew almost 3000 fans. Mark your calendars.
CSU Lacrosse Camp
This summer's High Altitude Lacrosse Camp is scheduled for July 7 - 10, 2005. It's expected to be even better than last years, stay tuned for all the details. Check out the 2004 Camp Pictures.
