No. 1 CSU Beats No. 13 Utah 16-5, Set For No. 3 BYU in RMLC Final
Greeley, CO

By Garrett Fitzgerald
April 29, 2005

On a snowy afternoon in Greeley, CO the Colorado State Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead on 4th seeded Utah in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference semifinals. CSU's early flurry of goals put the Rams ahead and they never looked back en route to a solid 16-5 victory. The Rams were able to hold Utah off of the scoreboard for over 20:00 to start the game and get a comfortable lead that they would not relinquish on the day. Ten different players scored points in a win that will match up the Rams against 2nd seeded Brigham Young on Sunday afternoon.

A pair of high school teammates teamed up to take over the game early on. Junior Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA) and sophomore Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) combined for 10 points, 14 shots, and 15 groundballs in the game. Cunningham scored four goals and two assists while Chorey had three goals and an assist. Second year midfield Pat Bird also another first-rate performance. In his second game back in the lineup after missing five games with a knee injury, Bird netted two goals and one assist. Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) had a strong showing with three goals and one assist.

The Rams dominated the statistical battle winning shots 54-28, groundballs 56-33, and clears 73% - 53%. Sophomore Ian Wilson (Arapahoe HS, CO) was unbeatable facing off going 6-6 as State went 15-23 as a team. CSU converted on two of four extra-man attempts, while Utah was not able to score on any of their three chances.

Junior goaltender Pete Jokisch recorded 10 saves for the victors while Utah's Jeremy Johnson had a solid day by notching 21 saves of his own.

Despite being behind the entire game, the Utes did find some momentum when they scored two quick goals to open the second half. Converting on back-to-back unsettled situations they brought the score to 7-4 just 4:00 into the third quarter. Colorado State answered quickly and decisively though as Flip Naumburg's squad rattled of four straight to put Utah away. Chorey buried back-to-back goals of his own and the CSU run was punctuated when LSM Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS, OH) ran the length of the field and got his second goal of the year to put State up 11-4.

Colorado State scored four goals in the final quarter to put the game out of reach for Utah. The Rams defense held the Utes' talented attack to just five combined points on the day.

The Rams move on for a rematch against the BYU cougars in a game that will pit the #1 & #3 teams in nation for the RMLC crown. BYU beat CU 9-8 in game that went down to the wire in the other semi-final. It marks the first time since 2003 that the two teams will compete for the RMLC crown. CSU's record is now 15-0 while Utah falls to 10-5.

Notes:
- This is the fifth consecutive victory for CSU over Utah since the Utes beat the Rams in 2003.
- Both teams did their best with the cold temperatures, it was in the mid 30s when the game started and fell into the 20s by the fourth quarter.
- Shay Cunningham now has the outright team lead in both ground balls with 52 and points with 56.
- Nick Stanitz-Harper has moved to #3 all time in scoring for the Rams, surpassing Pat Shanley with 206 career points.

CSU vs CU
On Saturday, April 16, at 7:00 pm the big game will be played at the neutral site of Shea Stadium, on the south side of Denver, in Highlands Ranch. Last year the game, which is and was coordinated and promoted by the CSU Ram Lacrosse Alumni Association, drew almost 3000 fans. Mark your calendars.
