Rams Get First Conference Win with 13-6 Victory Over #18 Utah
Carson, CA

By Garrett Fitzgerald
March 13, 2005

The Colorado State Rams moved to 9-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play with their seven goal victory against the University of Utah Utes. In a game where every member of the Rams saw the playing field the Utes kept it close through the first quarter in a neutral site game at Loyola Marymount University.

A lethargic Ram team came out in first period and after 15:00 of play they only led Utah 2-1. State then scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter to give them an 8-1 lead. Utah was able to get the first goal of the third quarter to bring the score to 8-2 but it was CSU who got the next three goals and took a 12-3 lead into the 4th. Colorado State had four minutes in penalties in the final quarter and allowed the Utes to gain momentum, but it wasn't enough as the Rams came away with the 13-6 win.

The Rams offense got production from all of their usual big guns as they out shot the Utes 63-40. Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) had three goals and two assists in the game. Sophomore Pat Bird (Bishop O'Dowd HS, CA) had a hat trick while grabbing three groundballs and senior Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) got two goals. Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, CO) also had a good day netting two goals and one assist.

Utah's offense was held in check for most of the day, however a bright spot came in the form of junior attackman Stefan Turkula who had three goals and an assist.

Tyson Ehinger (Heritage HS, CO) made his second start in goal for the Rams. The freshman had seven saves on the day before he was relieved after the third quarter by sophomore Adam Taylor (Air Academy HS, CO).

For the Utes, Jeremy Johnson had a valiant effort in goal ending the day with 23 saves against the high scoring Ram offense.

State won nearly every category in the statistical battle. CSU scooped up 55 groundballs to Utah's 41. Lee Cates (Rangeview HS, CO) went 9-13 at the face off X for the Rams as CSU went 15-23 overall. Utah's defense was able to hold CSU to zero man up goals on the day while Utah's extra man offense went 2-6.

The Rams will travel to Provo, Utah to take on No. 4 Brigham Young University Tuesday night at 7:00pm. Then, CSU will have a little less than two weeks before taking on No.3 Sonoma State.

Notes:

- Nick Stanitz Harper leads CSU in goal scoring with 27 after this game.
- Shay Cunningham holds the team lead in both groundballs with 32 and assists with 19.
- Colorado State has outscored their opponents 166-49 on the season with an average of 18.44 goals a game.

CSU vs CU
On Saturday, April 16, at 7:00 pm the big game will be played at the neutral site of Shea Stadium, on the south side of Denver, in Highlands Ranch. Last year the game, which is and was coordinated and promoted by the CSU Ram Lacrosse Alumni Association, drew almost 3000 fans. Mark your calendars.
CSU Lacrosse Camp
This summer's High Altitude Lacrosse Camp is scheduled for July 7 - 10, 2005. It's expected to be even better than last years, stay tuned for all the details. Check out the 2004 Camp Pictures.
