#2 Colorado State Rams takes out #1 California Santa Barbara Gauchos in thrilling 8-6 win at The First Four Lacrosse Invitational
Carson, CA

March 12, 2005

In long waited clash of MIDA #1 & #2 juggernauts, #2 Colorado State came away victorious as they defeated the #1 UCSB Gauchos 8-6 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The game definitely lived up to the hype of a battle between the #1 & #2 teams in the country, from the opening face-off neither team gave the other an inch as it was truly a test for both squads.

The teams traded possessions in the first quarter with each teams contrasting play becoming obvious. UCSB's possessions offense was in full force out shooting the Rams nine to four in the first quarter while controlling the ball for most of the period. CSU's potent offense was up to the task however, sophomore attackman Shay Cunningham (Algonquin HS, MA) had a goal waived off but then came back to get the first goal of the game for the Rams with 6:25 left in the first. Santa Barbara was quick to answer as George Granelli got UCSB on the board less than two minutes later.

After a back an forth first period with the score tied 1-1 UCSB came out and scored the next two goals to go up by two at 8:25 in the 2nd. Then CSU's explosive offense then unleashed a three goal flurry, in less than 40 seconds to bring the score to 4-3 with 7:06 left in the half. Each side got one more goal before halftime as the teams looked almost dead even going into the break.

The second half saw the makings of a star as CSU's junior goaltender Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst Jesuit HS, KS) possibly played the game of his career in net for the Rams. Jokisch was literally a brick wall stopping all ten of UCSB's shots in the third quarter. The Rams got the only two goals of the period giving them a 7-4 lead into the 4th.

Santa Barbara held onto the ball for the majority of the fourth quarter but the CSU defense stayed strong in font of their outstanding goalie. State did not let UCSB score in the second half until there was 4:50 left in the game with a Stefan Isaken bounce shot. CSU's junior captain Michael Murphy (Lake Oswego HS, OR) answered at 3:30 with a sensational no look shot passed UCSB's goalie Ryan Brittain to put the Rams up by two. Santa Barbara was able to net one more goal with 2:15 left. After that Colorado State was able to gain possession and ran the rest of the clock off for their first win in nearly two years against Santa Barbara.

On the offensive side of the field the Rams truly proved how efficient they can be, despite being out shot nearly two to one by Santa Barbra the Rams offence was able to produce with their limited chances. The combination of senior Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) and Shay Cunningham is proving to be one of the most lethal one two punches in the MIDA. Stanitz-Harper had two goals on the day both coming during the second quarter run by State, Cunningham was also magnificent netting two goals with one assist.

UCSB's lone multiple goal scorers came from their midfield, Stefan Isaken had three goals on 16 shots primarily going against States short stick middies. Colorado State's LSM combination of Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS, OH) and Ian Evans (Cherry Creek HS, CO) had their hands full with MDIA preseason player of the year Will Patton. Reiss and Evans did and excellent job of covering Patton and held him to just one assist on the day. The Colorado State close defense was almost as unbeatable as their goalie. Junior defensemen Kellin Bershinsky (Poudre HS, CO) was phenomenal shutting down the best attackmen who was on the field at any time for Santa Barbara. Adam Schnirel not only did his part on defense but he got into the scoring mix as well, going coast to coast in the 2nd quarter and firing a laser into the back of the goal.

The real story of the day was in goal, Jokisch was outstanding. Despite being beaten in almost every statistical category by USCB, the Ram's Jokisch was able to keep the Gauchos at bay. He finished the day with 23 saves including several one-on-one stuffs and some remarkably athletic saves. Brittain ended the day with only six saves; his frustration came out when he was ejected with 1:00 left in the 4th.

Colorado State now looks to take on conference rival #18 Utah with a neutral site game at Loyola Marymount University. From there the Rams will travel to Provo Utah to take on
#3 BYU.

Game Notes:

- Both teams' defenses were truly remarkable with nether team scoring on their man up opportunities in the game.
     o CSU went 0-4
     o UCSB went 0-5
- UCSB's Will Patton was dominant again at the face off X going 13-18 on the day.
