C.S.U. 16 UTAH 5
It was a strange day with strange weather. All in all, though, it was a day full
of irritations, including the 5:00 start that replaced the 7:00 original plan. We
had to scurry around all day to put all the pieces together, and things weren't generally
meshing the way I might have liked.
HASTE MAKES WASTE
My day got off to a great start when I backed out of the garage with the back flap up on
the topper on the back of my Tundra pick up. It does not clear the overhead garage
door. I bent it (flap) and broke its glass, but the terrible part is that this was
the second time that I have made this very inconvenient $300 mistake in the last 6 months.
Meanwhile I spent all the last two weeks preaching to "my" team about eliminating
unforced errors, a.k.a. turnovers. I think I can safely say that backing out of the
garage with the flap open would classify as an "unforced error", and doing it
twice in the same lacrosse season is pretty much pathetic. I'll be "turning over"
some more green to fix it. Way to go, Coach.
Looking on the good side, no one was injured, but I am sure that I upset the peaceful normal
existence of all the mice that live high so on the hog in my garage as I rumbled around
sweeping up the gazillion pieces of safety glass.
ANOTHER FLAKEY DAY
Snow fell off and on through the game. The air was still, so the large, flakey crystals
almost appeared to be floating and not falling. They never really even touched the
ground until near the end when it started to get even colder than it already was, and that
was pretty chilly for almost May. The field was slick, but not really in bad shape.
THE GAME
We got off to a nice, almost excellent start. After one, we led 6-0. Two minutes
into the second quarter we scored again and it was 7-0, and things were going nicely, thank
you very much. Then I made the mistake of telling them that they were playing well,
and I might as well have taken a sword and popped our balloon, or at least that's what it
felt like, and I also couldn't get anything inflated again for quite a while.
First we threw one in our goal for the Utes to help them kick start a minor come back.
The Utes put together a pretty fast break play just before the half ended to make it 7-2,
and it also gave Utah some momentum going into the intermission.
At half time I yelled at us pretty good. It wasn't one of those blood vessel
popping deals, but I was not asking questions, and I was spouting unhappy observations about
the first half at a pretty good clip.
WAY TO GO ROCKNE
The result was that we came out and played with even less emotion than we went into the
half with, and the residual effect ended up being a total of 4 unanswered goals. CSU
led by only 7-4 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter. I literally "watched"
Utah's 4th goal of the run while looking at the ground after we had "broken
down" defensively. I did not need to look to know. I just waited to hear
the roar from the other bench, and then I glanced up at the goal to validate what I already
knew. I was not a happy camper.
We recovered quickly, though, brought our energy back up and went ahead to score 4 goals
in a row for ourselves over the next 6 minutes to retake charge. We finished the third
with a 12-5 advantage, and we had recovered from 15-20 minutes of some pretty ineffective
team play.
The fourth quarter gave us opportunity to play everyone who had dressed for the game.
RMLC CHAMPIONSHIP
We will play BYU tomorrow (later today) at 4:00 for the RMLC Championship.
