CSU 19 COLO. SCHOOL OF MINES 1
THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT
I'd like to say we came through the 19-1 victory over Mines unscathed, but we did not.
I "brilliantly" let a very important player play (in an unimportant game) that
shouldn't have played many minutes due to an injury. I almost yanked him for good
at one point, but he gave me those baby browns and I was anxious for him to get more game
time to aid his rehab. Well, by letting him continue to play he re-injured the already
hurt part instead of gradually re-establishing a solid physical presence on the field.
MY BAD!
WHAT I THINK WE NEED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE
My belief is that if we are to move on and become stronger as a team, it is imperative
for us to get somewhat (quite a bit) healthier than we currently are. We need the
whole team now. We are suddenly not deep, especially on midfield. There are
now many good teams in the MDIA poised and ready to hurl the stone, the one that takes us
down.
THE FIRM OF BOWMAN, WALLACE AND LEHMAN - Specializing in April Fool Law.
Other than the one injury, today had very little to do with our immediate future, but some
future fixtures did get some extensive playing time, and that is always valuable.
The attacking group of Dylan Bowman (#88), Ben Wallace (#43), and Kevin Lehman (#30) flashed
some brilliance as an Attack unit and pretty much played the entire game together for once.
Led by the Dylan (3g,4a), the three freshmen amigos amassed 9 goals and 5 assists for 14
total points and they had a nice look of continuity as well. A deeper connection between
the three seemed to evolve during the contest. Actually it wasn't a contest at all,
but I did get to make a few points to a few individuals, which is more than I often get
accomplished in these kinds of games.
BACK TO BASICS
Usually the only thing that happens during blowouts that we win is that I begin to think
about Green Chili Cheeseburgers at some point, sometimes early, and it becomes something
I must do more and more as the game trudges on until I run to the truck right after the
festivities die down, and then I drive, like a zombie, the several hundred yards to my burger
palace. I am ashamed to admit that today was rather pathetically no different,
and I had the fries this time, too, which I never have.
WE ARE NOT HATERS
Believe it or not I did also manage to focus on and think about a few other things.
I wanted Mines to have fun playing us. I did not want to "establish" anything.
They are a B Division team. They are a small school and almost did not have a coach
this year. They do not have what we have. I do think we presented a good
will front today in spite of the final lopsided score. It was much more "civilized"
than most of our games are nowadays.
I was grateful that they (Mines) were willing to come up here and give us a precious home
game (4 total for '05) with so few teams out there traveling to Fort Collins these days.
I do notice, however, that they (highly ranked MDIA teams) will still fall all over one
another trying to get to Provo and the chance to play the BYU Cougars on TV.
MANO A MANO GRANDE
We had a consensual CSU goalie vs. Mines goalie face off in the second half today, and
I've seen goalies play in a chair, but I had never seen the face off with giant stick heads.
It was entertaining and amusing.
APRIL FOOL
I am the biggest April Fool. I always have been. I think they call them (me)
dupes and butts. This makes me not as amused by this sort of "joke's on you"
thing, because the joke is always and monotonously on ME. Today the lady at the gas
station points, and then says to me, "Your fly is down". I looked.
I was wearing lax shorts with no pockets or flies, and I was conscious of that fact because
I rarely come with a "fly" anyway, but I looked down like it was my job. Everyone
in the cash register line laughed. Ha ha. "April Fool". Yes I am.
So, they (MDIA people) played this huge "practical" joke on CSU lacrosse today,
All Fools Day, the first day of an otherwise great month. Would someone explain the
"practicality" part of these things to me? We were the perfect team for
them to put something out on of course.
An announcement went up on the web today, April 1, saying that our program had been banished
from the university for behaving badly and budget cuts, and that CSU lacrosse would now
become the Front Range Community College Rangers (?) lacrosse team, and all the kids would
"transfer" there. Now that part (transfer to FRCC) is funny. The on
line lacrosse forum at uslia.com allowed the new and made up "News" to spread
like wildfire.
I had nothing to do with any of this, but I hope a good time was had by all of those people
that played a part in the hoax.
On these kinds of deals the secret is never safe with me, so don't come to me for prank
provocation or collaboration. It is not what I do.
