Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Tuesday, February 8, 2005

I am a little nervous going into our first trip and the four quick games that it will be. I already know that we could be better conditioned as a team, and we could also be better prepared in our "assignments", but it’s all good. We need a test to find out where we are and which way we need to travel to improve. The exam is the whole weekend, not any one game. I do have a "game plan", even though I know very little about our first foe.

We have never played Auburn, and we open with them on Friday night. All I know is that a mere three years ago the Auburn Tigers went to St. Louis at the end of the year as a number 2 seed, and I believe they were undefeated that season before falling to UCSB at the Championships. They wouldn’t be so eager to travel all the way to Dallas to play us if they didn’t think they had something good going on. The Tigers have a new coach and presumably a very excited approach to the season. We already know that opposing teams always bring us their "A" game.

I see that UCSB is off to an impressive start as many California and Texas teams are into their seasons. I’m glad we are off to Texas for some early games, even if playing two in one day on Saturday scares me a tiny bit. Fortunately Dr. Ron (Team Chiropractor) will be coming along, bringing with him his amazing powers to heal.

It is my greatest hope that we play and act this weekend in a way that represents our program, team, and the university at the highest level.

Yes, I have some trepidation about the games, but I also have lofty thoughts about our potential. Onward and upward, and I will try to write some every day this week.
