Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse Rams Race Out to 18-3 Halftime Lead On Way to 22-8 Thrashing of Texas A&M
Colorado Springs, CO

By Alex Smith
February 28, 2004

Last year’s quarterfinal contest between the Colorado State Rams and Texas A&M Aggies was one of the most exciting in the tournament. The teams were tied late until the Rams went on a three goal run to win 12-9. This year would tell a different story. The Rams’ offense got on track in a big way, jumping out to an 8-2 first quarter lead on the way to an 18-3 halftime score. All players got in the game as the redshirts saw their last action for the year.

Derek Koll (Fort Collins, CO) got the first goal of the game jus t over a minute and a half in and the #1 Rams got two more in the next two minutes from Tim Farquhar (Collegiate, VA) and Michael Murphy (Lake Oswego, OR) before Jason Dunn was able to answer for the #9 Aggies. Murphy and Farquhar both had good games, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists and four goals and one assist respectively.

The second quarter was once again good to Colorado State, as they outscored the Aggies 10-1 to effectively put the game out of reach. Pete Jokisch (Rockhurst, MO) was solid in cage in the first half and ended up with nine saves in about three quarters worth of action.

Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest, CO) had his way with the Texas A&M defense, registering a hat trick on the day. Danny Stevens (Suffern, NY) and Tim Chorey (Algonquin, MA) also scored three goals.

The Rams’ goal scoring spree in the first half can be largely credited to the face-off dominance of Dave Clark (Cherry Creek, CO), who won 12 of 18 draws in the first thirty minutes. During the first quarter, Clark won 9 of 10 to keep the Rams on offense.

Defensively, Ryan Price (Arapahoe, CO) played very well against Dunn, holding the All-American attackman to just two goals. Kellin Bershinsky (Fort Collins, CO), Michael Greeson (East Grand Rapids, MI) and Adam Schnirel (Mt. Lebanon, PA) all had gritty defensive efforts as well. The majority of the Aggie goals came against second and third string defensive players for CSU.

Long stick middie Mark Plonkey (Golden, CO) played a very good game in his three quarters of action, scoring two goals, one on transition and one on a set dodge.

The Aggies outscored CSU 5-4 in the second half, but the closest they got was 20-7 late in the third. The game was cleanly played and only saw three penalties all day. The Aggies were penalty free on the day.

Colorado State will prep to meet Division III Colorado College on Sunday, while the Aggies will get ready to meet the Colorado Buffaloes at home next weekend.

Game Notes:

- The game was played on Colorado College’s newly renovated Washburn Field, which now features Field Turf, quite an improvement from their previous field.
- Danny Stevens had his third hat trick in a row against the Aggies.
- Every Ram on the roster got time in the game, including redshirts, who saw their last game action of the year.
