10 GOAL SECOND QUARTER PROPELS RAMS PAST SUNDEVILS
Tempe, AZ – Arizona State University Band Fields

By Alex Smith
February 8, 2004

After a win against the Arizona Laxcats on Friday night, the Colorado State Rams prepped to do battle with an improving squad from host Arizona State on Saturday. The game started promising for the Sundevils, who trailed 4-3 after one quarter. But a ten goal outburst in the second proved too much for the young ASU squad and the Rams coasted to their second victory of the year by winning 24-7.

Sophomore Derek Koll (Fort Collins HS, CO) scored the opening goal just a minute in with a wicked side-armed blast from the left side of the net as the Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Sundevils, set on putting on a show for their large crowd, got right back into the game with goals by Jason Bellard, Jeff Pilon, and Kalen Rickard. Freshman Danny Stevens (Suffern HS, NY) scored the first of his three goals in the first to open up a 4-3 first quarter lead.

In the second, the Rams’ offense began to heat up. Freshman Pat Bird (Bishop O’Dowd HS, CA) scored three goals in the second as the Rams went on a ten goal scoring spree. After Bird’s unassisted goal with 13:45 left, junior face-off midfielder Dave Clark (Cherry Creek HS, CO) took the face-off and scored an unassisted goal of his own just eight seconds later. Tim Farquhar (Collegiate HS, VA) and Thomas Robinson (Memphis University School, TN), also scored goals in the first four minutes of the quarter to give the Rams an insurmountable 8-3 lead early. The Rams took an impressive 21 second quarter shots.

The CSU defense was solid all day behind junior Ryan Price (Arapahoe HS, CO), and sophomores Kellin Bershinsky (Fort Collins HS, CO) and Michael Greeson (East Grand Rapids, MI). Senior Mark Plonkey (Golden HS, CO) played a very controlled game for the Rams after his miscues the night before against Arizona. Freshman Garrett Fitzgerald (Regis Jesuit, CO) put on an impressive performance and made 10 second half saves in the first game of his career.

A second attack unit of Stevens, Tim Chorey (Algonquin HS, MA) and Matt Reiss (Sycamore HS, OH) combined for ten points as everyone on the Colorado State bench got some time in the game. Junior Nick Stanitz-Harper (Eaglecrest HS, CO) led the Rams with five points and Bird’s four goals were a game high.

In all, 11 different Rams recorded points on the night in a very encouraging offensive effort. Despite seeing an abundance of shots, ASU freshman goalkeeper Jake Delashmit played well in the loss. Rickard’s two goals was the high for the Sundevils. A three minute stick penalty on Rickard did not help matters for ASU.

The Rams (2-0) will now have a week off before taking on Northern Colorado on February 19. They will then play the University of Colorado in the Pepsi Center on February 22.
