Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

We had three practices on our field this week. Two were really good, and yesterday was okay, but it was grumpy-coach-day, so I dont think they had as much fun. The defensive players were in good spirits, though, as we were about 1 for 30 scoring in the fast break drill (yes, I counted), and Im not sure extra man ever scored in 8 or 10 attempts at that. On fast breaks they should be hitting net at about a 50% rate or Im not too happy, so one can imagine the kneeling volcano (me), leaning on the stick-and-glove pacifier that I carry around with me.
I blew a gasket yesterday, Wednesday. At times there are a couple on the team who think they have a better idea about what we are or should be doing at the moment. Well, Im all eyes and ears. By all means, lets hear and see it. However, if you are simply too lazy or pig headed to do it the way I "asked" you to, then thats a whole different kettle of fish (We are going to Seattle). I do not wish to have mutiny before embarkation. People who always think about themselves first basically piss me off, even if they score a bunch of goals or whatever. My dream is for everyone to look good, not just # this or # that. When each individual thinks about the team first, that is what happens. Everyone looks good, including me. This is not an easy lesson, and not everyone always gets it.
Having said all that, I know I talk and write about #17 a lot, but in a way that is part of what his role is on this team. I hold him to the absolute highest standard, because that is the way I coach him. When #17 (Mark) plays well, or even great, it usually shines the spot light on the whole team.
We leave to go on "Spring break" in about 6 hours. I know it is hard for me to expect perfection, but I do expect, hard as it might become, to go out to the Northwest and play 6 solid games in nine days. Five wont do.
