CSU 22 - TEXAS A&M 8
The final score of 22-8 today was mildly surprising, but the score of 18-3 at the half was more than any self-respecting coach could hope for. Last week we had one very good quarter against C.U. Well, today we had 2 against Texas A&M. Wouldn't I like to see 4 of them tomorrow when we play Colorado College. At least they know we are here, because they (CC) were out there practicing after our game with A&M.
How much does tomorrow mean? Plonkey (#17) did not set foot on the field in the second half, and many CSU players were wearing their sweats before the third period was over. The statement we wanted to make when we came down here was not made today. The story can only be told tomorrow.
ANGRY MAN ON HOLD
Our first half was quality because we made very few errors and we buried pretty much every scoring opportunity, often finishing the score with a flourish of one or more extra passes, as if to just show them that we could. We had a few breakdowns on our ride, which led to easy goals for the Aggies, and I take some of the blame on that, but other than that the edges were all pretty smooth in the half. I don't recall scoring that many goals in one half against a team that I had considered a quality opponent. We quite literally ran them into the ground today, or should I say Nexturf?
We went into the locker room after the first 30 minutes (the very same locker room I had dressed in during my Tiger days), and I told them that they had screwed up my entire "Angry Man" halftime show for this day. What was I supposed to stress out about, other than how to micromanage the garbage that the second half was doomed to become. I pretty much talked about how nice it would be if we could play like we had in that first half all the time, from now until forever. We had played with purpose and passion. We dominated the middle of the field and the game was played at our pace, which was by no means slow.
IS IT TOO EARLY TO FEEL THIS WAY?
We might be farther along than we ever got last year, and we certainly have more offensive capabilities than we had last year, or maybe ever. Is it okay for me to feel good about where we are as a team? Or does that just lead to some kind of meltdown. I don't know the answer, but I fully expect us to bring out something close to an "A" game tomorrow, and I'll still be hungry for us to improve the next time we step on the practice field or floor this coming week.
THE SKY IS FALLING
Hey, Chicken Little, the sky is falling. Air Force beat UVA, the defending national champions in Division I lacrosse today. WOW! We live in a world that often has tremendous predictability, and then we also live in a world where the sky is the limit. When I personally look at where I was twenty years ago as compared to where I am now, I know that all things really are possible.
