IN THE CLEARING STANDS A BOXER
We had a great turnout for our first box tryout and practice yesterday at ODs. It felt good to be together again. I was pleased that so many (34 of them) showed up for a practice that took place several miles from campus. Those who could not come because of class or whatever contacted me, so we are pretty well connected, at least for a "club" lacrosse team in December, one on the brink of Christmas break.
I CANT YODEL, BUT IVE SEEN IT ON TV
I tried to bring to ODs yesterday the Box lacrosse things that I have learned by watching a Mammoth game tape. We talked about the rules (as much as I know so far). Many of our players have played a style of game inside that they perceive to be the box game, but the fact is that they have played an indoor version of field lacrosse, and the rules are different in the "real" box game. All I wanted to do yesterday was to bring a little of this concept to them (players). That, and I wanted to see who could run.
This is not field lacrosse played indoors. It is a game played in a different gear and with a new kind of tempo. I am still trying to get the specific rules hammered down. Its hard to get all of it from one tape. I know, for example, that there are situations where you can get a one on one penalty shot, like in hockey, but Im not completely clear on what brings them about. I think it is automatic if you have more than two in the penalty box. Are there other situations for a penalty shot? The thirty-second shot clock goes by the bye in the blink of an eye. That much I can see. These are some of the issues to be dealt with.
I MEAN THE BRADY BUNCH, NOT THE MANSON FAMILY
Everything looked pretty Helter Skelter early on at the ODs practice, but later I saw moments that clicked for me and there were even glimpses of the vision that I think Im looking for. I saw and learned plenty. Without a doubt we will need the whole team to have good practices leading up to the Pepsi Center game. This fact, along with the fact that I am a woossie make me want to put off cutting the Pepsi Squad to its required number of dressed players (seventeen) as long as I possibly can.
I wish I could put it off forever. It is hard with my whole no-cut-no-recruit philosophy to want to change, even for one game. I want us to do everything together, as a family. Plus, the farther we go with this thing as a team, the more we will grow as a team. We can all learn a lot from this experience. If I play my cards right, cutting 20 of them by next Tuesday or whatever doesn't really accomplish anything .
