Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Sunday, September 14, 2003

I have been actively and passively trying to find something interesting to say in here or out there. I’m not getting anything on the screen these days. I guess I need to write something in here just the same.

WOOF WOOF

This week we will split up a bit, and do the "Dog vs. "Underdog" kind of a set-up as I have often done when we have had a ton-o-guys. In essence we will become two teams. The point for me at this particular time is that I am not happy with our on-field continuity, especially on defense. Our defense is predicated on everyone understanding, and we are far from there.

I want to get the people who will likely be playing together, well, playing together, so that they can start the process of finding out about their potential, and not constantly learning to play with different people in every different drill or whatever. I also want to work on game-specific situations, up to and including time management and things like that.

Getting a two-team rivalry going for this week will be good for everyone, including the assistant coaches. For those who are in "Green" this week, and would rather be "Gold", my message to you is to dazzle me in green, and you soon will be wearing gold. Also, there are many ways to get my attention. Often, simply "not screwing up" is enough to impress me.

JUST ANOTHER ROADSIDE ATTRACTION

When I envisioned this 2003- 2004 season, I took a new approach. My feeling is that we (CSU) have had some really good games with "up-and-coming" teams over the last couple of years. For example, playing Chico State last October in Las Vegas was a far bigger challenge than the " J.V. " game that I had been led to expect. Chico had "come from nowhere" and eventually played themselves into the tournament in St. Louis this past May (I think they were in the USLIA final top 10 or 12). They also had tested us in more ways than the big rematch of the previous season’s CSU vs. Sonoma State USLIA championship game had on that very same day. Fall ball doesn't count, but I think it is foolish to ignore it.

These "wan-na-bee" schools get really excited to play us and to get that chance to knock us off our little rock, whatever time of year it might be. It is not just another game to them. I must admit that I like this kind of emotion coming at us. It tests us, and helps to show us things about our "team character" just as much as playing the Big Dogs like the Sea Wolves of Sonoma does.

Of course it is key that any season for us includes playing the highly ranked BYU’s, Michigans, and Santa Barbaras of our world as much as we can, and we will, but I took the approach that I want this season to also look a little like a "barnstorming tour". I knew we would need to travel a lot to get the schedule I wanted. Let’s play "all comers", was my thought as well. Often, the more and different kinds of tasks that a team faces, the better they often seem to bond and respond. Ultimately, my hope is that we will be more able to deal with all the weird things that might happen by being open to any and all challenges or challengers.

I guess I need to be careful what I wish for…. again. Both in state of mind and in the number of states we play in, our schedule is starting to look and feel more like a touring carnival than a college club lacrosse team. We are playing games in Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, and of course Colorado along our regular season’s journey. My hope is that in the "second season" we can add Utah and Missouri to the list.

WHEN DID I BECOME SPAM MAN?

I do not surf the internet that much. I have ordered things on-line, but nothing pornographic or "seedy". I do get my Vioxx (you need a perscription in the U.S.) from Thailand and on line. These are the "subjects" on the 8 e-mails that I received overnight last night:
1) "Bigger is always much better"
2) "Did I bother you?"
3) "Give her something to thank you for"
4) "Secure your future, Flip"
5) "Get out of debt fast"
6) "Generic Viagra on-line"
7) "Does size really matter?"
8) "Generic Viagra-no prescription needed"

I have never used Viagra, but I’m wondering if I should give it a shot. My question is, from the amount of opportunities that I have to buy easily on-line, and without a perscription, how much Viagra can one man possibly need or want? At least I am no longer getting the weird Persian (Farcy?) symbol messages. They gave me the creeps.
