A MAMMOTH IDEA

Yesterday I got a most interesting and exciting phone call. A representative from the professional indoor lacrosse league team in Denver, The Colorado Mammoth, was on the other end of the line. He informed me that the announcement to hold the 2004 NLL All-Star game in Denver this coming February had just been made, and that they wanted to invite us (CSU lacrosse) to play a game at the Pepsi Center in Denver as part of the extravaganza. We would be the preliminary, the "undercard" as it were. He said I was his first call, and that they were excited about the possibility of hosting the first intercollegiate Box Lacrosse (indoor) game in history. We would likely play C.U., which would be perfect, because we always play the Buffs twice anyway, and this could be our "non-league" affair, or date.

I could not turn this opportunity for our program down. Of course, I had just finished scheduling us for a trip to Tucson that very same weekend, so now I am scrambling to try and make it all work somehow.

The Mammoth would have us down to Denver for a couple of practices before the actual game, so we could learn about the 6 on 6 game and the goalies could get used to the "Michelin Man" equipment set-up and a smaller goal. I'm sure that my CSU "field players" will have no trouble adjusting to the mauling, brawling style of play that is box lacrosse. The question is if I will be able to get them to play "right" again after this experience is over.

It is true, I have been looking for alternate places to hold practices, but I had no idea that The Pepsi Center would be one of them.

This might be my first experience with "cutting" players, as I doubt we will need or be able to get 40 people on the bench there. I would say right now that Derek Koll (#12) is about the only shoe-in to make the "Pepsi Squad".
