I HAVE NEVER LIKED HUMBLE PIE THAT MUCH

Propane delivery truck driver guy, "You guys do something with lacrosse?"

Recognition. Cool. What tipped him off? I must just have a powerful lacrosse aura. No, wait. He had to maneuver around the 4 lacrosse goals just to get in here to fill the tank.

Flip, proudly, "Yeah, we make the pockets for the sticks, blah, blah".

If they made a movie of this guy, Wilfred Brimley would get the part of the remote but friendly Good-old-boy, walrus mustache and all. He just stared at me.

PDTD, "I was watching it on the TV the other night." He smiled.

It must have been an MLL Pro lacrosse game he might have seen

Flip, knowingly,"Was it pro?"

PDTD, "Nope, Army-Navy."

So, everybody’s got a satellite dish, and he’s patriotic. I waited for more. More didn’t come.

Flip, brilliantly, "Oh."

This led up to an awkward silence.

PDTD, "Isn’t there some kind of Semigh-pro team here now?"

Maybe he’d heard about us at CSU. No, wait. Think bigger. Think TV.

Flip, helpfully, "You mean the Colorado Mammoth. Yeah, they play down in Denver at the Pepsi Center. That’s professional, and they draw about 18.000 sometimes."

He nodded. Then he shook his head.

PDTD, "Too bad they don’t have a team at CSU".

Well, slap my face. Perhaps he hadn’t heard about us. How could this be? He probably knows everything about Sonny Lubick and CSU football.

Flip, trying not to sound shook up, "No, they have a team. I’m the coach."

PDTD, "Oh".

I’m thinking he wasn’t all that impressed with all this new info on local lacrosse that he now possessed. Maybe it was the Pirate t-shirt with cut-off sleeves I was wearing, I dunno.

Flip, speechlessly, "See yuh", and then I left, acting as though I had something important to do.

My work here is not done. I’m sure the guy was born within 20 miles of here, and there has been a club team at CSU since the 1960’s, and this guy had probably never seen lacrosse before this year with the Mammoth coverage on channel 9 news or whatever. Maybe this television thing will catch on. I wish I knew how to get on (in) it more.
