Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Friday, February 28, 2003

I am pretty sure that we were doing the same thing at the same time last year, dodging snow bullets for a game with a team coming here to play . Last year the trip west for the University of Minnesota Duluth was cut short when they had to turn the bus around because they couldn’t even get here. If they had, they would have been greeted by a foot of snow and freezing temperatures that would have been more at home in Alaska (except this year when they are booking Caribbean style vacations to the Aleutians. Is this Armageddon?)

I actually can’t ever remember it not snowing the first weekend of March every year in Colorado. That used to be the start of lacrosse season a long time ago.

After sending out e-mails to the team about all the things going on, including our spring break trip to Florida next week, I sent this final one out:

Friday,11;00 a.m.

Dear Team:

Wow! Okay. There are 4-5 inches of snow on the ground in Colorado Springs. They want to move the game tomorrow back to 2:30 so that they will have an opportunity to "remove" snow from the playing field. The CC coach, David Zazaro, told me that if it continues to snow tomorrow that we probably will have to bag it. The forecast is for snow showers through tomorrow. In effect there is now a strong possibility we might be going to Colorado Springs to have an $800 pajama party (on Papa). This is getting funny.

The coach from Illinois, who we are scheduled to play the day after tomorrow, is freaking out because they are starting to think that they spent 18 hours on a bus from Champaign, Illinois to go to Longmont, Colorado for a 3-day team camp in. Mines cancelled their game in Golden with Illinois today. I told him I thought we had a chance to play Sunday because we have no major accumulation. As long as it stops by tomorrow we should be good to go, if it warms at all. I asked for French Field (turf) as a back-up, but I was turned down (nicely). I might try DU, but I've already BTDT with the folks in Denver a few times, so I am not that hopeful.

Then there is Florida. So, the governor of Florida's plane was hit by lightning last night as it tried to land, in of all places, Tallahassee. They were diverted to Orlando and landed there safely. There are tornadoes down there. We are going there in 6 days. Is it me? The best laid plans and all that.

What is it they say?, "Buck up" (as opposed to this sucks or other things that end with -uck), "Hang in there"(they actually don't shoot horses anymore), "There is light at the end of the tunnel" (I only hope it is not an oncoming train), "Hugs, not drugs"(sometimes we must take a bite of the reality sandwich), "It's all good" ("it's all goo?"), or the ever-popular, "Tomorrow is another (snowy) day".

Whatever you need to do to in order to stay positive (other than altering your states), do it. Be ready for anything. Bring extra towels or underarmour. Bring different kinds of shoes and a few pair of socks so that you can change at half or whatever.
Love,
Coach
