Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

Wednesday, February 12, 2003 morning

We haven’t played ball outside on a field in almost two weeks. Our first game is just over 72 hours from this punch on the keyboard. I must ask them to play the way we did in practices in the fall, because there literally has been no real practices in recent muscle memory. Through it all we meet one or two times almost every day now no matter what. Something is going on every day, something that matters. My messages have focused predictably on individual preparation and staying together as team and family no matter what happens or what me may or may not have at our disposal. I have been doing a lot of preaching, maybe for my own resolve as much as anything. God, I love the team dynamic. It just absolutely juices me.

We don’t need to watch more tape or diagram defenses. We don’t need to do too many more "campus runs". We need what we can’t have. I hope it just makes us hungrier. It whets my appetite for challenge in a way I haven’t tasted in years. In some ways this season will be a lot more like "club" ball than I had ever hoped for, or should I say dreaded? That is the hand we were dealt. We will just have to play the cards the best we can and try to stay in the game as long as we can. .It is time to ante up on Saturday in Tucson, though.

We must perform at a high level and play as a family on the field against an outstanding and experienced Arizona team. The curtain rises on 2003 without the benefits of much rehearsal. We must perform without RECENT practice, and as if team excellence concepts are committed to team memory. I thought only virtuoso’s were capable of such things. This will be a new trick. Preach on preacher man.
