Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

I had a very nice weekend. Jordan and I went to the juego (playground) twice, and to Sonic to satiate my green chile cheeseburger addiction, and his love of fry once. I hadnt played
in a pile of fallen leaves for about 40 years before yesterday. This relates because we used lacrosse sticks to rake the leaves together. If there are those in my family thinking that I might
be hopeful of raising the next Mike Powell or whatever, I wouldn't count on it just yet. I have seen no signs, and one side of his family has the field heavily tilted toward soccer.
ARE WE READY FOR PRIME TIME?
The other day some of the players asked me to do a "report card". Several times in the past, sometime around mid-season, and honestly, usually when I am not happy with how we are
playing, I will post "evaluations" on every player. I hadnt planned on doing one this fall, because I have most always done them in the spring, and also because this fall has
been fun, and has seen a lot of improvement and growth from day to day. I hadn't felt the need as I usually had when taking on this project assignment. Last week we had a slight monkey wrench
thrown in the machine, but what is achievement without adversity? (less stressful for old men, is what it is).
The exercise of evaluation would for sure make me think about each and every one of them, and could only help me in preparing for Las Vegas. So, I spent a large part of this past Saturday
evening hacking on the computer, writing up my evaluations while listening to the World Series, game 1, on TV. I took our CSU player roster, and just went down from the top, #1, writing about
each player, one at a time, all the way to #52. I dont have actual grades that I give, although with some it is tempting. Nor do I have a formula about what I am looking for or writing
about. It is more ranting than rating. Sometimes my rantings can be "off the wall", but at the same time, they clearly reflect an association that I have for a guy as a player and,
or, as a person. I will post them today.
Some might think I pick on them by writing more or whatever, but in this case I really just tried to think, type, and keep going. Some got a sentence, most got a paragraph, and a few got
a dissertation. I try to say at least one good thing, if I can, and I try to give each one some sort of arrow or sign pointed toward the direction I would most like to see them go. This process
will most always relate to thinking how they, as one, can most help us, as a team. Hopefully, in the process we all learn someting about ourselves.
Who knows? Maybe the ratings will be a little pick-up fo us as we approach and prepare for the big season wind-up, which will be a 4-pack of games in one day. That day happens to be this
coming Saturday, only a little over 100 hours from right now.
