Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal
Sunday, October 13, 2002
It was chilly and breezy, but a wonderfully sunny day yesterday. There had been reports all week long of snow in Saturdays forecast. I think we got the "back" of the "front".
We (CSU Gold) beat Spot 8-2 in the early game, and later beat CU 9-2 in the finale. These were the best two teams that had traveled here to the Fort to play 3 games on a Saturday in October.
The CSU "Green" team beat Fort Lewis College handily, and played great under Gemp. I have to admit that I was in there coaching away, too, but I was "assisting". Heck, I
almost started coaching the Galyons Club team in their double overtime win against CU. Many on that team played here.
Alex was stellar in the goal early on against Spot, a local mens team with some really good players. Then the defense got in the groove, and coupled with our midfield speed and aggressiveness,
no one other than us had the ball for most of the rest of the afternoon. I do believe that any time we were scored upon on the whole day, we answered off the next face off with a goal of our
own.
We ran teams down. We had some lovely CSU style fast breaks, and unlike last year, we finished most of them.
WHY DONT YOU WRITE THAT IN YOUR JOURNAL?
The CU game was very intense, as always. After one of their players did something great, a "Why dont you write that in your journal, you......?" was heard from their bench. Actually,
I did not hear it. It was just reported to me later. It riled up some of my players, I guess. I somewhat enjoy it when other teams acknowledge me at all. It does not anger me. As a college player
I most loved to play at D.U., where many students would come to the game to razz me as much as for anything else. Im sure I gave them plenty of reason.
All I have to say to the CU "commenter" is, thanks for reading. However, when they (CU) started yelling at and upsetting our score/ timekeeper, then they had made a mistake. This person
is a good "friend" of Mark Plonkey, and they awoke the Manimal when they did that. He can sometimes take over the middle of the field when he chooses to do so. CU barely touched the
ball after the "table incident" early in the second half.
I know there is always so much I don't hear, but I try hard to keep some kind of lid on the overall trash talking that goes on amongst today's youth during my watch. I always forget that trash
has become art form; and I thought the whole Andy Warhol thing was weird. I do not have to like it (trash).
Near the end of this short game, when we were still playing hard and they no lnger were, some on the C.U. bench started calling us "Classless", as was fashion after CSU beat CU in
football last month. Well, then that awoke the ire in this sleeping old coach. If you want to push my little button, this is a good word to use. I am not ashamed that we play hard and try to
have fun, from start to finish. That is what we do here. These are golden moments in the life. After that, we scored immediately off the ensuing face-off, and I was so pumped up one might have
thought we were playing Stanford in May or something.
CU has a fantastic goalie, Chris Bluse. Their team looks to him for everything, and he has huge shoulders. Earlier in the week I was interviewed for the Campus TV station, and the guy asked
me if I was worried about Bluse, because he had not been there three weeks ago when we played CU close at the league tournament. Perhaps he would make the difference for them. I thought about
it. I guess at times last year we looked like we were intimidated by Chris' excellence in the goal or whatever. I do not think about goalies that we face. I think about breaking down the other
teams defense. I do not care who scores as long as it is us. I guarantee that we were thinking about the right things yesterday, and that most of our goals had taken the goalie pretty
much out of the equation before the ball ever hit the net.
LIFE IS A SPORTS ORGY
What a great time of year for people like me. Its football season, and I have NFL Direct TV. We are playing fall lacrosse with joy and intensity, and as if there is a larger purpose. Hockey
has started, and the NBA is getting ready to tip off while its still very much baseballs playoff season.
CSU had the homecoming football game, the so-called "Border War" with Wyoming yesterday. We won, 44-36. Im thinking that "they" come over our border more than vice
versa. The only time anyone from Colorado goes to Wyoming is to get on Rte. 80 to go east or west.
Last week I went to a Bronco/San Diego Charger game in Denver, my first visit to Invesco Field at Mile High (talk about falling all over yourself to not make anyone mad about a moniker). One
of my friends calls it the big I.U.D., which kind of spoils the experience of driving by the stadium for me.
TWO WEEKS UNTIL VEGAS, BABY
There is a big lacrosse deal going on at the Pepsi Center in Denver today, including several ex-CSUers trying out for the new Denver professional Indoor Lacrosse League franchise. It would be
great if one of them could make it.. I'd love to go, just to support them, but I had to sneak off just to do this while scanning a few football fantastic finishes. I am on family mode today.
I tweaked my knee and shoulder a touch yesterday. I need to relax. Youd think I was playing or something. These things always make me remember that I have no time to waste here. Every
coaching moment is precious to me now.
