Coach Flip Naumburg's Journal

The last few days have been wet. Yesterday they closed the fields. Some drove by and waved bye bye as the rain poured down. A bunch of us just stood around in the rain, or sat in our cars at the field and chatted, as if none of us could think of anywhere we would rather be in spite of the standing water weather.

I guess it is a "bye week" with no game this weekend, but I still wish that we could have gotten more done this week than we have. Pulled hamstrings and swollen testicles have not helped the cause. I still have hopes of progress today. Though chilly, it is partly sunny and mostly promising for practice time conditions. It’s like we haven’t really gotten out and run this week, and I don’t want a week to go by without at least one practice with really good tempo.

I think I will always have one player on any team who is like a John Riggins. John Riggins was a great fullback/freight train for the Redskins back when they were winning championships in Washington two decades ago. This guy would basically spend the week in therapy or traction until Sunday, at which time he would get up, don the pads and go outside and run people over all afternoon. We have a player who is an incredible "gamer". The thing is that my greatest desire is that he could also be an incredible "practicer", because that is how a team, and more specifically, a team defense can best "get jiggy". It’s just life, and I shall muddle along. Some of them are physically babies and some of them are 20 year-olds hidden inside 40 year-old bodies. This player is a senior, and I am very much rooting for him to be injury free this year, because I think that will help unlock a whole new player that we have only seen a glimpse of.

This CSU team is full of players with huge hearts. I expect and believe that we will reflect this as a team. Maybe that is a big part of my excitement this year, because I don’t know how much individual, on-paper talent we have. That is hard for me to measure. However, I feel like I do have a good read on how talented we could be as a team. These kids like to play together. Again, I don’t know how all this will match us up with other talented teams at our level, but I can’t wait to find out. I suppose we will find out a little about what’s what in the USLIA three weeks hence in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I have requested to play BYU, and, sort of, whoever else wants to play us out there. BYU vs CSU is sort of the traditional finale of the day. I hope they do that again. Other than that, it doesn’t matter to me if we have a "re-match" with Sonoma State or play UCSB, or whatever. I hope we play someone we have never played before. With 14 teams going, it will be the biggest "Best of the West" ever.
