NOTES FROM THE ALUMNI GAME

We alumnied on a sunny, warm fall Sunday afternoon. Many "fresh", older faces appeared: Roth, Coy, Wilson, Priebe, Hamm, Napolilli, Davis, Husson, Lambert, Wolper, Heth, Ferrin, Shanley, Ehrlich, and more. This was sure to be the strongest alumni challenge to date. Three had recently returned from Australia and international competition. Even so, they couldn’t have enough depth on midfield, could they?

The alumni drew first blood, a Doug Priebe wrap-around that pumped up the hearts and hopes on the elder bench. We had to endure the "Priebe Taunt". It’s a little dance that he does. Very amusing. We answered with a Timmygoal,. The alumni came right back, though. Mike Hamm back-cut the world, as he likes to do (sneaky and freaky), then stuck it inside on Alex to give the Alums a 2-1 lead. He likes to scurry off the field with his arms raised and crossed after he scores. I was starting to look like the one who might need a transfusion. I was not pleased, standing there with my arms folded on my chest.

Apparently that was all they brought, however, as we scored the next 16 goals. The score was 15-2 at half, and finished 19-6, as we let them score a few at the end so they could all feel like they had a good time, and give the program $50 before they left.

Tim had 5 goals and an assist. It will be interesting in Vegas to see how teams play us. It’s not like The Farquhar is hiding in Fort Collins. The other teams know about him, even though he is just a sophomore. I hope we respond well when opponents try to shut him off or whatever. I have faith in this team’s versatility, and it isn’t even something that I have to develop. It already runs through their veins. I believe in Tim’s ability to adjust and do what is necessary as well, even though I suspect it won’t always be easy for him. You have to do whatever it takes, always.

Oh, by the way, Kale had 5 points, and the middies had like 26 points (goals/assists) altogether. I do not plan on hiding that fact either. I want the strength of our team to be running up, and mostly down the middle of the field. I want to win face-offs, and I want to own the ball against every team we play the way we did yesterday. These goals do not make me unique, or even smart. It just is where my focus is with this team.

I take nothing from this game as far as the "state of the team" is concerned, except that we are coming along, one step and one day at a time. This team prepares to play in a good way. One player couldn’t quite manage to get back from a wedding in Denver, and this did upset me a little. Oh man, those Heritage H.S. kids drive me crazy sometimes. We have gotten a lot of talent from there over the years, though.

The crowd at the game was excellent. We had parents, we had alumni parents, and we had fans. Then, of course the mere size of our team on the sideline makes anytime a festive occasion. The attendance yesterday was larger by far than any game we played at CSU in 1997, my first spring season. Campus Television was there to cover our Alumni game? It’s hard to believe. The gathering at Sullivans after the game was great as well. It was obviously far more people than the tavern was prepared to handle on this Sunday evening. Burgers took an hour, but only I, plus one or two others cared. Everyone else was just having a great time, talking and refreshing.

It was a great event, a "Program" day. Several "young ones" didn’t get enough playing time in the game, but it is tough with 50+ players and just one game’s worth of time.

A great thing is that I know the alumni want this team and this program to keep going and rising. It would be disappointing to them if an alumni team could really beat the current team. We are the "Fun Program". WE… are fam-il-y
